Police Athletic League Youth Link Tutor in Harlem, New York

The Police Athletic League (PAL) is the largest independent youth organization in New York City that provides educational and recreational activities for children and young adults. PAL Inc. and The New York City Police Department work in partnership to provide communities with summer and after-school recreational and educational activities.

We are looking for a part-time Tutor who will be responsible for assisting high-risk teenagers in the area of homework assistance and improved literacy, math, science, and humanities. The tutor will also be responsible for developing and facilitating a group Service Learning Project with Youth Link participants in a paid internship. The tutor needs to be able to engage academically disconnected youth as well as facilitate virtual group workshops (virtually and in-person) and contribute to the development of the Service Learning Project curriculum. In accordance with guidelines related to the COVID – 19 Pandemic, tutoring sessions may be held virtually until it is safe to resume in-person services.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Model and uphold all Agency rules.

  • Meet with Youth Link counselors to discuss youth’s academic progress or difficulties as well as behavioral issues that may affect learning.

  • Provide individual tutoring. Small group tutoring may also be required. Virtual tutoring sessions using various online platforms could be required.

  • Develop creative and innovative subject curriculum for struggling and disillusioned students.

  • Facilitate and develop virtual weekly Service Learning Project workshops.

  • Conduct school visits for youth engaged in tutoring (not required at all sites).

  • Build positive relationships with youth and staff and serve as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication, and behavior.

  • Create stimulating lessons or activities that enhance grade-appropriate learning.

  • Respond to requests from Senior Management Staff.

  • Observe and document youth who appear to have weaknesses in academic areas.

  • Respond to any requests Youth Link staff may have with regard to the educational needs of youth.

    Additional Responsibilities

  • Submit weekly, monthly, written, and verbal reports as requested.

  • Attend staff meetings.

    Skills/Knowledge Required

  • Ability to work with high-risk teenagers from diverse backgrounds.

  • Prior tutoring experience with the high school curriculum.

  • Experience facilitating groups with high-risk adolescents.

  • Minimum Associates Degree required.

  • Ideal candidates will have the capability to provide both virtual tutoring and workshop sessions (laptop, wifi, etc) as well as report in person.

  • Ability to work a late afternoon/early evening weekday schedule.
