    Principal of Regional Summer School

    Salary: $8,300 (Depending On Experience and prorated to date of beginning the work)

    Position Purpose

    Under the general supervision of a supervising administrator, this position provides leadership and supervision in administering the Regional Summer School Program (RSS) in order to promote the educational development and achievement of students in accordance with Board of Education policies, administrative procedures, rules and regulations, and applicable law.

    Essential Functions

    The Principal of Regional Summer School is a temporary position with responsibilities beginning in early February and typically concluding by early September. During the months of February through June, this position is responsible for all activities required to establish the annual program. Duties during this time frame include, but are not limited to:

  • Secure the hiring and placement of all instructional and support staff.

  • Create brochure for districts that highlights all course offering, hours, location, etc.

  • Assure that the necessary facility is secured and ensure space is adequate.

  • Arrange for telephone drops to be added in area slated for the ‘office’.

  • Arrange for HFHO BOCES maintenance to bring all stored Regional Summer School files and supplies to the summer facility.

  • Assign teacher rooms.

  • Craft signage for incoming staff and students.

  • Coordinate with RSS counselor to ensure IEP student needs are fully met and staffing is commensurate with enrolled students.

    There are no set hours for employment during the months of February – June. Work can be arranged to accommodate other full-time employment. This period of time is task oriented and only requires a small number of work hours each week.

    During the months of July and August, the principal is responsible for all daily aspects of operating the summer school. Summer School classes run for six weeks, Monday through Thursday, 7:00-11:30. The typical work day is about 5 hours, or as needed.

    During the summer months, the principal holds all of the typical responsibilities of any middle or high school building principal. These duties include:

  • Ensure all Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES policies, procedures, and practices are adhered to.

  • Ensure that all August Regents tests have been ordered including large print and or braille

  • Receive and secure all Regents material

  • Ensure all reports are accurate prior to Business Office billing.

  • Correspond with all 10 districts about attendance, grades and behavior concerns.

  • Secure from districts necessary calculators needed for Regent testing

    Upon completion of the Summer School, the Principal oversees closure of the program and develops and submits reports to participating districts, the Board of Education and the State Education Department. This position also remains available via telephone, email, or scheduled meeting to answer questions as they might arise through the early part of September. This timeframe does not conflict with other full-time work.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles.

  • Knowledge of Middle and High school curriculum and concepts.

  • Knowledge of best practices in administration, program evaluation and staff supervision.

  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education.

  • Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.

  • Ability to develop and implement projects.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.

  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and conflicting time constraints.

  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to leadership, performance and professional growth.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

    Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

    Work in standard office and school building environments.

    Equipment

    Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier and fax machines, and telephone.

    Travel Requirements

    Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

    Qualifications Profile

    Certification/License:

  • New York Certification as School Building Leader (SBL), School Administrator Supervisor (SAS), or School District Administrator (SDA).

  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

    Education

  • Bachelor's and Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in School Administration or other related educational discipline.
