Job Summary

This position is part of a team responsible for planning of the LIPA transmission system from 23kV through 345kV and overall coordination and compliance of elements on the bulk electric system with applicable reliability standards. This position offers challenging opportunities and problem solving scenarios where the engineer will be able to incorporate and observe his or her creative ideas come to fruition. The transmission planning position pioneers the future by recommending, analyzing and integrating various cutting edge technologies into the system. On the job training and adequate guidance are provided to engineers as needed.

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct complex power system design studies (load flow, short circuit, and stability) and financial analyses to compare different alternatives, while ensuring the LIPA transmission system from 23kV through 345kV is compliant with governing design criteria and reliability standards, including mandatory North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Bulk Electric System (BES) requirements.

  • Recommend the most cost effective transmission plans to meet applicable reliability performance requirements, to adequately serve existing and future electric load and to integrate resource power injections.

  • Perform near term seasonal operating studies and system operating limit analyses to support Transmission Operations.

  • Conduct long-range transmission studies including study of new capacity resources resulting in annual capital construction programs and system improvement projects and recommend changes to the existing transmission system.

  • Active participation in New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) planning, compliance and interconnection processes and associated task forces / working groups.

  • Perform, oversee and approve system reliability impact studies of merchant generation and transmission project proposals and municipal delivery requirements.

  • Evaluate proposed / new NERC Standards and continuously monitor for upcoming changes to existing NERC Standards.

Job Specific Qualifications

Required Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering

  • A minimum of 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience​​​​​​

  • Understanding of the fundamentals of engineering

  • Demonstrated analytical skills with attention to detail as well as planning and organizational skills

  • Must have working knowledge of Microsoft office products (Excel, Access, Power Point, Word)

  • Demonstrated verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to respond to emergency storm and other conditions may require fieldwork during nights and weekend.

  • Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license with a safe and satisfactory driving history

Desired Skills:

• Electrical utility experience

• Familiarity with the transmission and distribution systems

• Able to read / understand electrical one lines
