The Temporary Advising Assistant, as part of the Office of Academic Programs and CALS Student Services, is a dynamic role responsible for helping coordinate support for students associated with CALS undergraduate degree programs. This service will be delivered in a team-based environment where each staff member will be expected to provide exceptional professionalism, foster collaboration, and strive for premier customer service.

Description of Duties:
New Student On-Boarding and Orientation Programming
This temporary position will mainly support the on-boarding of approximately 900 new undergraduate students (first year and transfers) for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences from the time of deposit in May through orientation events in August for the Fall 2021 semester. This will include virtual activities that encourage student engagement prior to their arrival to campus. Work in CALS Student Services requires that confidential student information be handled with the utmost discretion while using sound judgement and maintaining FERPA compliance. A university access agreement must be signed for access to student records as well.
Onboarding new students over the summer months will include:

Management of a social media platform that provides academic support and preparation for Cornell. This includes oversight of student volunteers assisting with the platform.

Edit and update CALS GO (Get Orientated) the virtual orientation program in Canvas. Conduct strong collaboration with the CALS majors and departments to provide content and information specific to new students.

Prepare and assist new students for the pre-enrollment process in July by offering virtual sessions specific to enrollment, monitor enrollment status and conduct individual outreach to students not engaging.

Organize and host regular virtual sessions focused on new student support and needs.

Orientation support will include:

Assist with event management and planning to include preparing materials, room reservations and ordering food.

Attend orientation events to assist staff with programming, facility needs and overall coordination with caterers and other vendors.

General Student Support
Additional assistance is needed for the on-going support provided during the summer months to all CALS students.
This work includes:

Assist with academic grade review preparation and attend the June meeting.

Assist as needed with the Pre-Freshman Summer Program.

Provide basic academic and career guidance to students once trained by CALS Student Services staff.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with a minimum of one year experience working in an educational setting with students and in program planning.

Understanding of community engagement and social media.

Demonstrated computer skills and experience with report preparation and analysis.

High level of discretion and sound judgment with confidential information is required.

Ability to effectively communicate and work with students, parents and families

Ability to independently coordinate programs and manage activities is essential.

Thorough knowledge of undergraduate programs.

Must demonstrate an understanding of the mission of the College.

Must be organized and detail-driven; strong inter-personal skills and relationship building qualities, good public speaker who can effectively represent CALS with a variety of audiences.

Must possess the highest standards of integrity in order to develop trust with new and current students, faculty, staff, and employers.

Proven ability to work in a team context and to set priorities, manage competing demands and to provide timely response to urgent issues.

Solid experience with standard desktop productivity tools, including word processing programs, database management systems, and spreadsheets.

Ability to sustain ethical workplace practices and confidentiality.

Must be able to set priorities and manage competing demands.

Identify opportunities for process improvements and then work with supervisor to begin executing upon them.

Understand the linkage between metrics and efficiencies.

Ability to place customer/stakeholder needs as paramount by actively engaging these same constituencies to continuously seek opportunities for improvement.

Ability to market services to students and faculty.

Must possess the capability to build and maintain a positive rapport with students and faculty alike.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree with minimum 3 years experience in an educational setting with students, in advising, event management and or in program planning.
