Bright Horizons Child Care Cook in Ithaca, New York
Prepare nutritionally balanced, attractive family-style snacks for Bright Horizons children. Plan menus taking into account the center/school budget, the foods in season, local availability, and state and federal nutritional requirements for children. Incorporate Bright Horizons' mission, culture, goals, values (HEART Principles), philosophies, policies, and development of an inclusive environment. Keep an accurate inventory of supplies and orders replacement of supplies as needed. Child care has special demands in that we care for children who in many instances, cannot care for themselves. It is critical that the Cook be mentally and physically fit to perform the duties outlined in this job description.
At the Cornell Child Care Center, preparing morning and afternoon snacks is a primary function of the role. In conjunction with sanitation of dishes 3 times per day. The center averages 125-150 children daily.
This role is 8am-5pm Monday-Friday
8:00-9:00: Preparation and delivery of morning snack with dishes
9:30-12:00: Retrieving dishes from the classroom, sanitizing, and delivery for lunch
12:00-1:00: Lunch Break
1:00-3:00: Retrieving lunch dishes, sanitizing, preparing afternoon snacks, and delivery of afternoon snacks to the classroom.
3:30-5:00: Retrieving dishes from the classroom, sanitizing, final sanitization of the kitchen

Is flexible to the daily business demands of the center/school, including scheduled working hours and room assignments, i.e., working in a classroom if necessary.
Maintain confidentiality about issues concerning other staff members, children and families or Bright Horizons management and operations. Must not involve parents/guardians in location concerns.
Support organizational mission, philosophies, values, goals, and policies to parents/guardians, coworkers, and community.
Demonstrate flexibility and openness to new ideas in child care practices.
Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and other location events.
Respond to location and organizational needs by attending regional training, contributing to a newsletter, serving on a task force, or substituting at another location.

Planning, Preparation, and Maintenance of Equipment
Be knowledgeable of state nutritional requirements of children.
Plan, post and follow approved menus that are nutritionally sound, making substitutions as needed, keep accurate inventory records and place a food order, all within center/school food budget.
Chop, cut and prepare and serve food in amounts that are based on the number of children eating that day.
Serve food at appropriate temperatures and in the appropriate serving containers
Maintain effective, safe storage for food, cooking and serving supplies, equipment and utensils, and cleaning supplies in accordance with state and/or local regulation.
Keep the refrigerator, stove and hood, can opener and other appliances clean and in good working order.
Clean the kitchen counters and shelves, (spills on floors as needed).
Lift and carry bulk food appropriately when delivered and store food on shelves above and below counter level in accordance with safety guidelines. May involve the use of a footstool.
Maintain and follow all safety and health rules of the location.
Encourage children to utilize appropriate health, safety and nutritional practices.
Keep accurate meal and snack count records as required per region guidelines.
Safety and Sanitary Procedures
Follow all Bright Horizons and local regulatory health, safety and hygiene procedures including but not limited to lifting, carrying (pan, dishes, cans), hand washing, etc.
Empty and clean trash and garbage cans. Physical demand 10-40 lbs.
Wash and sanitize dishes and cookware using the Sanitizer machine or local sanitizing methods as determined by local Health Department.
Understand emergency procedures and what to do in cases including but not limited to: fire, tornado, hurricane, and chemical leak, CPR/First Aid when necessary; including lifting and carrying injured children.
Ask for help and assistance when needed.
Maintain positive and supportive business, licensing and regulatory relationships.
Work in harmony with other center/school staff and show enthusiasm toward the job. Handle routine situations with good judgment, flexibility, and good humor.
Participate in and cooperate with group decisions; is a team player.
Establish and maintain a relationship of cooperation and respect with coworkers.
Assume a fair share of work. Look for ways to be helpful. Demonstrate initiative.

Meet all requirements for van driving responsibilities if applicable.
Responsible for the food shopping as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Will frequently lift or move average weight (10 to 40 lbs.)
Will occasionally move or lift average weight (10 to 40 lbs.) in awkward or difficult position.
Will rarely lift heavy weights (over 40 lbs.), normally only in emergency situations. (Some children, equipment, or supplies may weigh more than 40 lbs.)
May be required to stand up for 95% of the day.
Able to physically and mentally react immediately to unexpected circumstances.
Seek assistance to perform physical demands of the job if necessary, i.e., lifting or moving heavy weights.
Must be able to stoop and bend to interact on child's level.
Must be 18 years old (21 years if responsible for driving a van).
High School diploma/GED required.
Has relevant experience in a licensed child care facility kitchen, commercial kitchen, public school cafeteria, or equivalent.
May be required to have food service/food handlers permit or license according to state/local regulations.
Must meet state requirements for Cook and additional center/school requirements may apply.
