The Department of Animal Science offers undergraduate and graduate programs on the biology and management of food, laboratory, and companion animal species. We maintain major research, teaching, and extension focus on dairy science and our graduates assume many different career roles from the farm level through agribusiness and other allied industries in New York State and beyond. Our research programs advance our understanding of animal biology and address local and global issues facing animal industries today. Our goals are to discover and develop new techniques and information to benefit animals, agriculture, and human health.

Responsibilities:

The effort distribution will be 80% teaching and advising and 20% extension. The primary teaching responsibilities will consist of introductory courses in dairy cattle production along with leadership of courses related to the Cornell Dairy Fellows program. The teaching responsibilities will comprise approximately 12 credit hours annually through teaching at least two formal 3-credit courses and other course supervisory roles. The appointee will be expected to be involved with, and provide leadership to, some of the student trips associated with the dairy management program and extramural activities (e.g., Dairy Fellows case studies, Dairy Challenge). Development and leadership of summer programs (e.g., short courses, certificate programs) will be expected. The extension effort will be conducted as part of the Cornell CALS PRO-DAIRY program and will be focused on areas of the appointee's expertise. Engagement with dairy producers, allied industry professionals, and extension educators is expected.

This position is full-time 12-month appointment and will be located in Ithaca, New York. This is a five-year term with reappointment depending on funding and performance.

Qualifications:

Advanced degree (M.S., D.V.M, M.B.A. or Ph.D.) with interest in dairy herd management, economic and quantitative herd analysis, farm profitability, and leadership skill development. Three to five years of postgraduate experience in the dairy industry or in an academic setting is preferred. A strong interest in undergraduate teaching and advising along with providing leadership for dairy industry educational programs is expected and essential.
