Facilities Management (FM) provides maintenance, grounds, and custodial services to the entire campus. FM serves as a partner within the zone structure for the Contract Colleges (CC), Endowed (EN), and Student and Campus Life (SCL) zones.
As a key steward of the University's facilities, FM is responsible for facility assessments, skilled trades, general construction, building care, grounds, recycling, asbestos, and the management of planned, corrective, and preventive maintenance.
The Grounds Department at Cornell University is looking for a motivated and hard working individuals to join their team! The S04 Grounds worker position performs manual labor and independently operates light equipment for general landscape maintenance and/or landscape construction tasks, including turf maintenance, plant maintenance, litter control, snow removal, and other duties. It is a responsibility of this position to promptly report unsafe conditions or damage to campus landscape, equipment, or facilities. An individual in this role will safely operate hand and self-propelled equipment and tools including string trimmers, walk behind mowers, chainsaws, blowers, hedge trimmers, snow blowers, rakes, shovels and tractors/utility vehicles to achieve required landscape standards.
The Grounds Landscape Worker position is subject to call-in twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to handle emergencies, especially snow related emergencies. It is subject to shift changes and extended working hours (including nights, early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays) to meet seasonal work demand. Additionally, someone in this role would be subject to working in weather related extremes of high and low temperatures, snow and rain for extended periods of time, and coming into contact with sewage and dead animals or being exposed to bees/stings and other environmental allergens are all possibilities.
This position is covered by the UAW Collective Bargaining Agreement. At the end of the probationary period employees will be required to pay union dues per article 1 of the agreement.

What we need:
A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
You must have and maintain a valid driver's license because you may be required to operate a motor vehicle (your own vehicle or Cornell-owned) to travel to/from job sites.
You must have two years of demonstrated work experience with landscape maintenance, landscape construction, or a related field in a fast paced commercial landscaping environment.
You must have a working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the landscaping trade.
The OSHA 10 hour trainings is required but if you don't have it, you'll just need to complete it within 6 months of hire.
Excellent interpersonal (oral and written) skills are a must as you'll need them in order to interact with a diverse range of people.
A proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team and a strong customer service orientation, all while providing a helpful and friendly approach to serving the campus community is absolutely necessary.

Formal training in ornamental horticulture, agronomy, arboriculture, phytopathology, ornamental plant pests, and/or equipment operation.

This is a union position within the United Auto Worker's bargaining unit (UAW). The rate of pay is $18.53/hr.
