The is an initiative of the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs (OPVIA) at Cornell University. The Initiative aims to cultivate new collaborations that advance science, scholarship, teaching, outreach, and engagement in ways that generate new insights into critical problems. We wish to provide a stronger evidentiary basis for policy and place Cornell University at the forefront of migration studies worldwide.
The Migrations Initiative is the recipient of a Mellon Grant titled Cross-Border Movements: Racism, Dispossession, and Migration. This three-year grant will be used to create collaborative research, learning, and public engagement spaces and develop an antiracist and anticolonial agenda that transforms the university and advances racial justice. The research, teaching, and engagement will revolve around three interdisciplinary themes: 1.) Authority, Governance, and Racial Injustice, 2.) Climate, Dispossession, and Natural and Built Environments, and 3.) Trafficking, Displacement, and the Right to Stay Home. This Program responds to historical and ongoing nativist and racialized violence in the U.S. by turning the university into a living laboratory where we examine histories and contemporary instances of racism, dispossession, and migration.
The Program Manager, under the general direction of the Vice Provost for International Affairs, is responsible for the Migrations initiative, including the implementation of the Mellon grant. Responsibilities include administration, budget and finance, communications, programming, event planning and outreach, human resources, and reporting in compliance with applicable OVPIA/University or external policies. The Program will award grants for curricular development and will coordinate activities of interdisciplinary research teams. Public-facing activities will include public broadcasting and podcast initiatives and outreach at the K-12 and community college levels.
This is a three-year term position. The position's primary focus will be:
Work with faculty leadership to identify and develop grant proposals for further expansion of the Migrations Initiative.
Develop, implement, and maintain appropriate policies and procedures for the Initiative.
In consultation with the vice provost and the faculty project leads, develop, oversee and implement programs, events, lectures, faculty symposia, or programming, both in-person and virtual.
Develop, and manage the review of several grant award competitions.
Responsible for overseeing all grant reporting and evaluation.
Develop, organize, and execute a one-week-long summer workshop, "Pathways to research," to be developed in year 1 for undergraduate juniors, exposing them to research questions and methods at the intersection of racism, dispossession, and migration, and implemented in year 2 and 3. Similarly, develop a summer institute for advanced Ph.D. students and early-career scholars
Develop and implement a communication strategy for each aspect of the project, including social media and website presence, in collaboration with the OVPIA Communication team.
Master's degree in Higher Education, International Education, Migration Studies, Public Policy or Administration, Business, or related field with three to five years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced knowledge and demonstrated active engagement in international student services, academic program coordination, grant management, administration, project management, or another related field. Experience with supervision and a strong mentoring skill set. Ability to interact effectively with diverse populations, including students, faculty, staff, and partners, and demonstrated ability in creating and maintaining effective relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
Ability to be self-directed, work effectively with great attention to detail, exercise sound judgment and discretion, work cooperatively as a team member, and have professional communication skills. Comfort with computer programs such as Excel, Word, etc.
