Embark Veterinary Research Scientist / Senior Research Scientist - Survey Specialist in Ithaca, New York

About the role:

On the Discovery team, you will work to collect phenotype data for genetic research initiatives. There are multiple levels of data collection required including coarse data collection for hypothesis generation as well as fine data collection for detailed analysis, which may require extensive QC/QA to establish data quality. You will work closely with other Scientists and Veterinarians to develop relevant surveys based on specific research objectives and monitor and assess data quality resulting from those surveys. In addition, you will work with Engineers, Product Managers and Marketers to create the best customer experience and increase customer data collection efficiency to improve discovery output.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead the development and improvement of Embark’s customer surveys

  • Launch surveys to support data collection for Embark’s research initiatives

  • Assess the quality, reproducibility, and reliability of survey data

  • Build out the research survey platform and experience in accordance with Embark’s long-term vision and mission

  • Work across teams (e.g. with engineering, product, marketing) to:

  • Improve the customer survey experience

  • Refine processes and workflows for survey development and release

  • Track, test, and improve survey engagement and completion rates

  • Advise on the storage and database structure for survey response data

  • Be an excellent individual contributor by delivering high quality data, data analysis, as well as thorough reporting and documentation

  • Leverage your deep survey knowledge to advise leaders how to best tackle problems associated with survey data collection and quality

    What experience we’re looking for:

  • 5+ year experience, Master’s, or PhD in Survey Methodology, Survey Science, Data Science, Biology, Psychology, or similar

  • Strong skills in survey development and testing

  • Experience working with third party survey software such as Qualtircs, Survey Monkey, Alchemer or similar

  • Experience working with email campaign software such as Klaviyo, Mail Chimp or similar

  • Extensive knowledge and experience with surveys including logic, data quality considerations, respondent behavior, techniques to minimize straight-lining and dropout, techniques to increase engagement, etc.

  • Experience in analyzing data contributed by Community Scientists (i.e. Citizen Scientists)

  • Experience assessing and establishing the quality of data contributed through surveys and forms

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent statistical proficiency

  • Coding and data analysis experience in Python and/or R; Python skills preferred

  • Strong project leadership skills

  • Experience working in and/or leading multidisciplinary research teams

  • Experience with genetic data preferred

  • Experience with AWS or similar cloud technologies preferred

  • Experience with databases (SQL and non-relational) preferred

  • Experience with customer-centric product development preferred

  • Familiarity of dog biology, including traits, behavior, and health concerns, preferred

  • Passion for dogs and research
