Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs - School of Continuing EducationAPPLYCornell University's School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions (SCE) dates back to 1876 and is dedicated to extending Ezra Cornell's vision of an institution "where any person can find instruction in any study" to include "at any time, in any place." The School was described by Cornell President Jacob Gould Schurman in his 1892 report to trustees as an "integral part of the university," and was one of the first official summer programs offered in the United States. SCE offers for-credit courses to students outside of regular academic semesters (winter and summer sessions), serving approximately 6,000 students each year, including Cornell and non-Cornell undergraduate and graduate students, high school students, international students and scholars, adult learners, professionals, area residents, and retirees. It also offers opportunities for students not matriculated in a Cornell degree program to enroll in for-credit courses during the fall and spring semesters. In Fiscal Year 2022-23, SCE mounted more than 400 classes and programs, enrolled, and registered more than 5,600 students, and collected approximately $31 million in tuition, program fees, gifts, and other resources. Core Programs*The Cornell University Summer and Winter Sessions* offer hundreds of for-credit on- and off-campus, online, and campus-to-career classes and programs to thousands of matriculated and non-matriculated students from around the world. Part-time Study is designed* for non-matriculated students, including visiting high school and undergraduate students, Cornell employees, area residents, and corporate learners. Participants include students from the Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar Pre-medical Program, Cornell Prison Education Program, and National Education Equity Lab. During fall and spring semesters, part-time students register exclusively through SCE for study in Cornell classes. *Cornell University Precollege Studies offers classes year-round, including three- and six-week online and residential summer classes for motivated high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors from around the world. SCE also collaborates with Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) to provide academic and administrative support for the pre-medical portion of the six-year program, including facilitating recruitment of qualified faculty, ensuring quality control of courses taught, maintaining support of the Ithaca-based participating colleges, and appointing jointly with WCM-Q the Ithaca-based course directors. In addition, SCE offers advising support for WCM-Q pre-medical students and facilitates their application for admission in Cornell University's Ithaca-based schools and colleges, should they decide to obtain an undergraduate degree prior to seeking admission in the WCM-Q medical college program. Signature InitiativeSCE is launching a new online bachelor's degree program, working closely with Cornell's Provost, the Vice Provost for External Education, the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, and an advisory board of Cornell faculty members. The degree will draw heavily upon existing expertise and resources of Cornell faculty and eCornell to ensure a high-quality educational experience. Position SummarySCE invites applications for a Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs who will oversee academic programs, faculty engagement, curriculum development, and academic administrative operations in support of fostering learning excellence for its traditional and non-traditional student body. Academic leadership responsibilities include:- Maintain innovative and impactful programs and courses that align with SCE's mission and focus on teaching effectiveness, academic excellence, and operational efficiencies.- Liaise with Cornell schools, colleges, departments, and faculty to develop new academic programs and courses.- Oversee Summer Session, Winter Session, and Part-time Study programs including pre-college, online, domestic travel/off-campus offerings. Supervise program staff.- Oversee calls for courses, course approvals, and review course evaluations.- Develop and oversee academic policies and activities ensuring compliance with university policy and accreditation standards.- Partner with the Dean to work closely with constituents from across the university in developing an undergraduate online degree program that meets Cornell's high academic standards.- Represent SCE in university academic committees.This is a full-time position that is based in Ithaca, NY. This position generally follows a 4:1 campus-to home hybrid work schedule to promote work-to-life balance. A full-time in-person schedule may be required initially and at other times depending on responsibilities and to connect with the campus community.
