Temporary Field Assistant IIAPPLYTemporary Field Assistant IIBuckler Lab -Moore Lab -Cornell Institute of Biotechnology We seek a temporary full-time (39 hrs/week), benefits-eligible Field Assistant II to help with experiments in fields and greenhouses for a period of at least 6 months.This position works with two groups specializing in plant breeding and genetics:- The Moore Lab focuses on plant breeding for sustainable cropping systems, taking multiple approaches, including breeding for organic systems, for intercropping and polyculture systems, for pest resistance, and for ecosystem services. They work with a range of species, including cover crops, perennial forages, bioenergy crops, and hemp.- The Buckler Lab uses functional genomic approaches to dissect complex traits in maize, Tripsacum, cassava, sorghum, and other crops. They exploit the natural diversity of these plant genomes to identify the individual nucleotides responsible for complex (quantitative) variation and then apply it to US and global breeding. The project this technician would help with investigates freezing tolerance in Tripsacum grasses, which are closely related to corn, trying to identify relevant genes. The long-term goal is to extend the growing season of corn.Duties include:- Harvesting research plots, collecting, drying, and grinding plant samples; digging and (re)potting plants; building and maintaining electric fences.- Greenhouse work includes watering, phenotyping, pollinating, and harvesting seed. Required Qualifications:- Formal training beyond a High School Diploma of 6 months to 1 year or equivalent. Experience in a field and/or greenhouse setting, of more than 1 year or educational equivalent.- Candidates must have a valid driver's license as harvesting research plots involves some local travel.- The candidate must be able to work in greenhouses and traverse maize fields in a safety conscious manner and lift and carry supplies in the field and greenhouse. Must be able to lift at least 50lbs.- Ability to use Microsoft Excel.- The incumbent must be enthusiastic and flexible and possess excellent organizational and communication skills to work well with others.- Attention to detail and efficiency are a priority.- Must be punctual.Ideally, the successful candidate will have an interest in genetics, plant breeding, and/or horticulture.
