Urban Outreach Program Educator - Ithaca, NY

The role of this position is to deliver positive youth development programing in an after school or summer day camp setting. The key roles of this position are to provide youth with dynamic, educational and fun programing, and form positive connections with youth as an adult mentor within the program setting. This position collaborates with other Urban Outreach educators and other educators within CCE to engage youth in programs that cultivate self-awareness and self-expression, build senses of belonging, connection and mastery, and develop health and wellness. This position will provide children with programing around academic skill-building, career readiness, literacy, team games, art, music and dance, explore local natural areas, facilitate sports and other related activities, and co-lead field trips. This position will prepare existing materials and set up activities and provide transportation for youth to and from programs. This position will interface directly with parents and caregivers in a welcoming and inviting way. This position will interact directly with volunteers and have some volunteer oversight responsibilities.This is a part time, benefits eligible, 20 hours per week position.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree appropriate to the responsibilities of the position and minimum of 2 years related work or volunteer experience required in teaching, community development, grassroots leadership development or extension-type work. Or High School Diploma/ GED and 3 years related volunteer or work experience as detailed above.
  • Ability to organize and facilitate leadership development educational programs to target audiences.
  • Ability to engage diverse audiences and to be in a supportive and empowering role with others.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels using various media.
  • Ability to utilize program resources within the community and monitor program funding.
  • Commitment to purposes and goals of the Natural Leaders Initiative and civic leadership development initiatives.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include some evenings and to accommodate delivery of educational programs.
  • Reliable transportation to locations away from the office to meet the program needs
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of working with racially/ethnically diverse and low-income audiences.
  • Established relationships with under-represented Tompkins County communities, organizations and key leaders.
  • Familiarity with the barriers and potential solutions to civic participation and leadership for "natural leaders" from under-represented communities.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Program Responsibilities:
Program Delivery - 75%

  • Deliver positive youth development programing in an after school and summer day camp setting using existing materials, curriculum, methods and activities.
  • Provide mentoring in the program setting, including one on one interactions and personal coaching
  • Lead group activities with focuses on teamwork, creative expression, and problem solving.
  • Provide academic enrichment activities, including homework help, literacy skills, and other established career readiness curriculum.
  • Participate in field trips and outings, which may require weekend and evening hours
  • Provide a physically and emotionally safe environment for program participants at all times
  • Support program delivery efforts of other program staff/volunteers.
  • Carry out other program delivery-related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Program Evaluation - 5%

  • Assist supervisor to interact with program participants to obtain their evaluation of programs, using pre-determined evaluation tools.
  • Discuss results with the supervisor for strengthening and improving programs.
  • Inform the public of evaluation data within the marketing plan parameters.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Management - 5%

  • Oversee volunteers on-site.
  • Assist in recruitment of volunteers, and in volunteer schedule management.

Coordination/Operation - 10%

  • Maintain accurate records of class participants, using appropriate forms. Complete reports, collect and prepare all paperwork as required by NLI's program documentation process.
  • Organize program logistics (meeting space, snacks, transportation, teaching materials, etc.).
  • Adequately prepare for the delivery of programs through the preparation of materials, space, and through necessary communication with participants and caregivers.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of the Urban Outreach program and Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to:
  • Attendance at staff meetings.
  • Coordinating program delivery tasks with other staff.
  • Assisting with general marketing of Extension programs.
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.
  • Maintain and follow all confidentiality protocols regarding all program participants as established by association.
  • Assist in planning field trips.
  • Recruit participants for program.
  • Assist in training of volunteers.
  • Communicate with family members and caretakers about participants on areas such attendance, transportation, medications, behaviors, experiences, field trips dietary requirements, etc
  • Input evaluation data on the program

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.
  • Participate in required orientation programs and Association-required meetings.
  • Participate in scheduled meetings with supervisor and team members for leadership updates and resource sharing.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the Association by performing all assigned duties in a professional, timely and accurate manner.

Health and Safety - Applied to all duties and functions.

  • Support the association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
