Queens Community House Activity Specialist- Social Worker in Jackson Heights, New York

Title: Activity Specialist-Social Worker Position: Part-Time, Temporary

Dates: June 2024 to August 16, 2024 Hours: up to 24 hours per week, M-F Salary: $20.00 per hour

Queens Community House (QCH) is a multi-site, multi-service settlement house that serves the diverse population of Queens through a broad network of programs and services for Children and Young Adults, Adults and Families, and Older Adults. We are a modern interpretation of the traditional settlement house, bringing to our work current best practices, cost-effective management, innovative leadership, and a passion for social and economic justice. Our mission is to provide individuals and families with the tools to enrich their lives and build healthy, inclusive communities. QCH programs serve approximately 25,000 Queens residents each year in neighborhoods throughout the borough.

The Activity Specialist-Social Worker is a temporary position to support participants who need short-term counseling or as-needed intervention in our after-school (June 2024) and summer camp (July-August 2024) programs.

Primary Tasks:

  • Provide effective, age-appropriate positive youth development services, conflict mediation, crisis intervention, and de-escalation support with program participants as needed

  • Provide short-term, behavioral support and counseling for children ages 5-13

  • Provide support to group leaders on participant supervision during the program and on trips

  • Provide support to group leaders on techniques and approaches to effectively engage participants when they are distraught, dysregulated, or agitated

  • Understand and enforce program expectations, policies, and protocols to ensure a safe and respectful environment in alignment with agency, school, and funder protocols, and guidelines. 

  • Communicate with Program Directors and Site Leadership daily about any concerning participant behaviors, de-escalation efforts, or mediation efforts, and provide documentation as needed

  • Demonstrate appropriate written and verbal communication with all stakeholders of the program (participants, families, teachers, and QCH staff) aligned with the QCH Employee Handbook

  • Attend weekly staff meetings and complete professional development hours as indicated at the time of hiring.

  • Other duties as assigned by your supervisor(s).

Qualifications

  • Enrollment in an MSW program or recent MSW graduate

  • At least one year of experience in leading and conducting activities for youth in an after-school or camp setting.

  • A specialization/experience in the activity content area you are applying for.

  • Strong facilitation, conflict resolution, and group management skills in working with groups of youth ages 5-13 years.

  • Knowledge of skill development strategies in working with youth ages 5-13 years.

  • Strong work ethic, professional demeanor, and team-oriented attitude.

  • Computer savvy and excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Depending on site requirements, complete all required background checks and related documentation and be cleared to work in NYC DOE schools or NYS-DOH monitored community settings.

Additional Details:

Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

Salary: $20 per hour

General Schedule: Summer: Monday – Thursday from 1:00-6:00 pm and Fridays from 11:00-5:00 pm.* hours may vary from this, as needed, at a specific site and will be confirmed at the time of hiring.
