Audubon Community Nature Center, Inc. Seasonal Nature Educator in Jamestown, New York

General DescriptionACNC’s Seasonal Nature Educator teaches classroom nature programs, works with Nature Educators to modify classroom teaching points and methods, helps with festivals and events, and assists with teaching other programs at the center when school is not in session. Other tasks may be assigned as skills and time allow.Minimum Qualifications•Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience•Experience teaching in an elementary classroom setting •Experience teaching children in informal settings •General natural history knowledge and comfort in the outdoors •Familiar with office equipment, including copy machines, and computers •Enthusiasm and the ability to be dynamic•Valid driver’s license and own vehicle•Self-directed, but also able to work in a team environment •Flexible and open minded•Must pass a background check as the position involves extensive work with children.Preferred Qualifications•Degree, or pursuit of a degree, in Education or the Natural sciences •Aspirations to be a Nature Center Educator•Experience using Microsoft AccessDetailsWage: $15.80/hour, no benefits October through March: October 1, 2024 - March 31, 2025 20 - 35 hours/week, occasional weekends: Generally, Monday through Friday work schedule, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Hours are somewhat flexible, as there are some weekend events, some days when afternoons are free, and some days schools start earlier than 9:00 a.m. There may be some weeks when you are asked to work Saturday instead of Monday.Classroom Visits: You are expected to teach classroom programs throughout the duration of the position. This involves learning certain programs for each grade level, Pre-K through 5. Training and observation opportunities are provided before you teach your first classes. Classroom programs involve interacting with children, classroom management, and conveying knowledge effectively to elementary aged students. Typically you will teach 5 - 6 programs in a school day. Three to four days per week are spent in schools.Other Programming: There are a handful of Camp Days during the course of the year on school breaks. These are one-day programs that mimic the Day Camp program and activities in different seasons. You would observe and assist with the first day, co-lead the second day, and lead subsequent days. Normal days include Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day, sometimes Patriots Day, two days during winter break, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and Presidents’ Day.
