Duties Description Under the direction of the Regional Safety Manager, the Water Safety Coordinator oversees regional water safety activities on a seasonal basis. Tasks include:• Assisting in recruiting, testing, hiring, and training of water safety personnel.• Reviewing lifeguard certifications for acceptability.• Working with park managers on scheduling personnel• Performing regular inspections of all regional aquatic facilities and filing written reports with the Regional Office and the Agency Water Safety Unit. • Recommend necessary action to achieve the safest and most efficient operation of the regional bathing facilities, ensures that an effective in-service training program is maintained and if necessary, conducts the training. • May also assist police and the State Director of Water Safety with investigations of serious accidents, submersions or drowning.• Coordinates lifeguard equipment and uniform inventories and advises water safety equipment purchase requests for the region. Performs other water safety duties as assigned. • Incumbent will communicate on a regular basis with Facility Managers and Regional Safety Manager in addition to the Regional Director, Assistant Regional Director and the Director of Water Safety as needed or requested. • Adhere to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.After the swimming season is over, the incumbent will assist the Regional Safety Department on a part time basis; 2-3 days per week. Duties will include:• Assisting the Regional Safety Manager with coordinating and scheduling safety trainings.• Instruct First Aid/CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) / AED (Automated External Defibrillator) classes. • Monitor the Regional AED inventory to maintain compliance with the AED Program. • Assist with yearly fire extinguisher inspections, maintain, track and update inventory, and ensure replacement extinguishers are serviced and available.• Monitor safety needs and purchase equipment and supplies. • Assist with the planning, scheduling, and directing of regional safety meetings, respirator fit tests, and risk tree assessments. • In the absence of the Regional Safety Manager, attend meetings related to the planning of special events.• Perform additional safety related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Regional Water Safety Coordinator should be certified (or obtain by an agreed upon date) as a “waterfront lifeguarding instructor” and have at least three seasons (six months) experience as a supervising lifeguard. The required practical leadership may have been with NYS Parks or an equivalent capacity in another organization.
Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.• Obtain and maintain instructor certifications in Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Stop the Bleed from the Stop the Bleed Coalition.• Must be available to work weekends and holidays as needed.
