Position Summary:
- Accountable for the management of Maintenance and Engineering for the Lackawanna plant assuring the achievement of designated safety, environmental, quality, productivity, cost and customer service goals.
Essential duties and responsibilities which must be performed in order to carry out the position purpose summarized above:
Direct and manage staff: select, hire, train, coach, monitor and assure performance goals are met. Administer discipline. Maintain positive employee and labor relations. Assure compliance to the union contract.
Work closely with operations to develop and implement short and long term business goals and revise as required.
Direct the mechanical, electrical, and process control operations for the 13” Bar Mill facility to meet established goals and objectives.
Adhere to operating budget for Mill, Maintenance, and Shipping operations.
Maintain mechanical, electrical, and computer equipment required for mill operations within approved operating budget.
Develop and maintain established environmental standards and EPA ordinances, particularly for the boiler house and SPDES permits.
Assure safety of the department employees and equipment; maintain OSHA standards; implement safety policies and procedures and oversee training of Maintenance employees. Assign housekeeping responsibilities.
Identify and implement training for mechanical, electrical, and technical salary personnel.
Construct, install, and test mechanical, electrical and technical engineering improvement of mill operations.
Obtain and manage outside contractors needed for necessary Mill equipment, building and grounds repairs.
Obtain proposals for material and services necessary to maintain the facility. Write requisitions for obtaining material and services. Obtain, evaluate and select bids for work with outside vendors.
Assure all quality parameters are met per the Quality Management System.
Complete or oversee administrative reporting associated with maintenance, quality, safety, workers’ compensation, etc.
Serve as a member of the Lackawanna management team, participating in the development of departmental policies, practices, procedures and providing assistance as required.
Assure compliance with all company policies.
Support continuous improvement initiatives.
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
Specific knowledge, training or skills required to perform the duties of this position. Specific concepts, courses, training programs or required certifications:
Technical background in engineering. Minimum Associate’s degree in related field of study. Working experience in a multi-craft industrial with equivalent training could be an acceptable alternative.
In-depth understanding/knowledge of product, process, and technical expertise related to steel rolling.
In-depth understanding/knowledge of electrical, mechanical, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic principles.
In-depth knowledge of Best Maintenance Practices, equipment reliability, vibration, lubrication, thermography, etc.
In-depth interpersonal skills: demonstrated ability to relate to all types of people; demonstrated trust and integrity.
Supervisory, mentoring and leadership skills.
Basic general business know-how: budgeting, planning, purchasing, etc.
Ability to evaluate and negotiate pricing structures.
Computer skills: word processing, spreadsheets, data analysis and administration; email and internet.
Advanced computer skills for maintenance management systems. i.e., CMMS know-how, work orders, planning, scheduling, tribology, vibration, thermography, and water treatment analysis.
In-depth root-cause problem solving, analytical and organizational skills.
Written and oral communication skills, including strong listening skills.
Flexibility and resilience.
Knowledge of EPA and OSHA regulations and other regulatory agencies.
Knowledge of QS 9000 & TS 16949.
Essential Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Very demanding position: long hours, standing, walking, stooping, sitting, and climbing; requires physical agility and dexterity.
Ability to see, communicate, hear and utilize electronic communication devices.
Demanding work environment.
Plant working conditions: hazardous, dirty and subject to weather and temperature extremes.
Previous experience that is necessary background to qualify for this position:
Seasoned level of management experience in the steel industry.
Seasoned leadership experience in a union environment.
Seasoned level of experience in mechanical, electrical, electronic and hydraulic equipment management.
Moderate level of business, purchasing experience, and labor relations experience.
