Who we?re looking for...

RWS Entertainment Group is currently seeking a Director of Technical Services to join our team of world-class designers and production staff.

About the role...

Reporting to the Senior Director of Operations, the ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing, educating and guiding the Technical team in supporting the in-house scenic and event designers in all technical aspects of the production process. This role is part administrative and part hands-on and will lead in-house and contracted technical staff to manage the details needed to ensure the successful and safe installation of all productions, tours, and experiential activations.

What?s expected...

  • Ensure all technical aspects of the production work smoothly, efficiently, and safely.

  • Oversee technical division accountability and maintain a sense of urgency with a strong ability to prioritize and solve issues efficiently.

  • Coordination between the artistic, technical and production management divisions within RWS as well as clients and vendors.

  • Prepare labor and material estimates for proposals and productions based off of design drawings.

  • Manage projects effectively within a given budget.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, coworkers and clients.

  • Continuously remain on the cutting edge of rigging, technology, design, and safety practices and regulations.

  • Ensure a safe environment for staff, artists and patrons.

  • Manage Technical Director, Assistant Technical Directors, in-house and contracted technical staff by providing support and feedback to ensure employees are growing and working to potential.

  • Monitor the work hours, holiday hours, and vacation time of all workers within their division to ensure efficient use of human resources.

  • Coordinate the schedules and resources of the technical team for the timely execution of the install process.

  • Convert designs into CAD drafting to translate the designer?s vision to a build shop and working construction drawings for scene shop bids and builds as necessary.

  • Ensure technical division is regularly working towards a smooth advance process to provide for safe and efficient installations with clear communication.

  • Understanding that the position may require extensive traveling with evening and weekend responsibilities depending on production schedules.

What you bring...

  • MFA in Technical Direction or equivalent experience required

  • Experience in the entertainment and live event production industry

  • An extensive knowledge of safe theatrical and event construction and rigging practices and regulations

  • Knowledge of all technical elements associated with commercial and theatrical lighting, video production, and installation

  • Demonstrated strategic, critical thinking and problem-solving skills which exemplify the ability to identify issues or challenges and find a reasonable solution

  • The ability to offer analysis and decisiveness when making decisions

  • The ability to train, supervise, and mentor staff and over-hire crew in preparation for builds, load-in, running, maintaining, striking, and removing/storing scenic and technical elements of productions

  • The ability to build and manage budgets and cost estimates for a wide range of clients and price points

  • Expertise with power tools, ladders, heavy machinery, aerial work platforms, and electricity. Strong technical and mechanical skills, including experience with metal working, MIG welding, rigging, scenic construction techniques, and budget management

  • Familiarity with pneumatics and automation systems

  • The ability to create floorplans, two and three-dimensional design models, and technical drawings

  • The ability to analyze technical riders and specifications, and advise on best practices for our clients

  • Ability to work at heights in excess of 100 feet

  • Experience in supervising crews with varying levels of skill

  • The ability to negotiate with vendors and discover creative solutions to keep projects on target and within budget parameters

  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, calmly and effectively execute under tight deadlines, manage multiple projects, and work in a fast- paced, deadline-oriented environment

  • Strong organization skills, exceptional attention to detail, safety, and excellent analytical, advanced verbal and written communications skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to quickly develop trusting, productive relationships with clients, vendors, staff and all partners

  • Willingness to "roll up your sleeves" and get into the details as a team player with a "get things done" proactive attitude

  • Proficiency in MS Office and iWork applications

  • Advanced knowledge in the following applications: Adobe CC 2019 programs (Photoshop and Illustrator required), Sketchup, Vectorworks, and AutoCAD
