Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement Healthy Foods Coordinator in Long Island City, New York
Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement is a community based non-profit organization that offers comprehensive services to the youth, adults, seniors and families in the Western Queens community. Riis is seeking a part-time coordinator for its Healthy Foods Initiative. The coordinator will be responsible for implementing, monitoring and ensuring the smooth operation of the Healthy Foods Initiative.
Establish a Resident Healthy Food Committee: to engage residents in the development and implementation process for healthy food initiatives.
Schedule a Cooking and Eating Together event at Riis Settlement: Free meals presenting delicious, seasonal foods prepared in a culturally-sensitive manner for 60 community members quarterly.
Coordinate the “Tasty Stations and schedule:” Develop Mobile food-prep stations offering sample tastings. Develop schedule to happen during City Harvest and Grow NYC food distribution, tenant association meetings, workshops and community events.
Monthly Healthy food skill building workshops: The FRIDGE [Food-Related Intergenerational Discussion Group Experiences] curriculum (adapted to our demographic).
Community Chef Intensive: Training for paid internships working in Riis Settlement’s kitchen and asdemo chefs for our “Tasty Stations”. Identify seniors or candidates to work in our kitchen for 10 hours a week.
Statement of Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
Bilingual Spanish/English strongly preferred
Ability to organize and prioritize efficiently
Exceptional interpersonal skills
Strong communication skills, including demonstrated writing ability
15 hours a week (dates and times to be determined) - March 1, 2016 to August 31, 2016
