Andromeda Advantage Inc Senior Manager of Business Development & Employer Partnership in Long Island City, New York

The Andromeda Community Initiative (ACI) is a nonprofit workforce development entity providing free hands-on and certification training in general construction, clean energy/green construction and masonry restoration, to persons seeking to escape poverty through gainful employment in the industry. Headquartered in Long Island City, New York, ACI provides quality training and workforce development programming imparted by subject matter experts and credible messengers to persons in criminal justice reentry, overcoming homelessness, and cycles of welfare dependence and other barriers, bridging the gap between companies in need of qualified workers and individuals seeking career ladder employment. ACI is seeking a Senior Manager of Business Development & Employer Partnership to build new employer relationships, particularly with respect to green and clean energy construction, that will significantly enhance the number and quality of job placements and internships available for its graduates. This ideal candidate for this role will have:

  • A demonstrable track-record of success in strategic marketing and relationship building;

  • An awareness of systems of recruitment and labor sourcing for entry level labor in construction;

  • An understanding of the role of Section 3 of the Housing and Urban Development Act in employer recruitment and of Local Law 97 in driving energy efficient construction projects overall; and

  • Existing relationships in the construction or development industry that will drive placement activities.

    The Senior Manager will report to the Executive Director and his designees and will regularly collaborate with the Director of Job Placement (who supervises ACI’s student facing placement services).

    Responsibilities

    Strategic Leadership and Business Development

  • Cultivate new (and expand existing) employer accounts to allow for the placement of 20 graduates per month (240 per year in jobs or clean energy internships [estimated at 20+ companies actively hiring at any time, depending on the number of positions needed per company]

  • In conjunction with client facing job developers and internship coordinator generate 20 placements or internships per month, 240 per year. [Placements must occur within six months from the end of each of 12 cycles per year and 150 are to be clean energy jobs or internships.]

  • Record all employer and student level interaction in ACI’s data system and secure verification (paystub or employer letter) when necessary.

  • Directly drive client placement activity when new accounts are initiated and partner with ACI’s job developers and internship coordinator to share accounts for ongoing placement on seasoned accounts.

  • Share adequate information with ACI’s job developers and intern coordinator to allow for suitable job and internship candidate referrals with emphasis on factors such as required skill level/specific construction abilities or certifications, necessary second language skills, NYCHA or neighborhood residence of graduate, and progress on specific ACI contracts goals.

  • Support the generation of replacement opportunities for clients whose initial jobs end and identify advancement opportunities for candidates who demonstrate successful work and/or obtain further certification.

  • Utilize strong communication and sales skills to institute a network of Developer, General Contractor, and subcontractor partners that look to ACI as an ongoing source of entry-level labor, partner to project future need, inform the content and curricula of future trainings and provide letters of support for ACI fundraising.

  • Make consistent and frequent calls to employer networks to check in on hiring needs and generate new job orders. [This role will require extensive phone work].

  • Develop new employer relationships by scheduling and conduct daily prospecting, colds calls, texts, face-to-face meetings, street level outreach and tours of ACI’s training site.

  • On an ongoing basis, review MWBE employer lists, NYCDOB Websites, Construction Financing information, Construction Blue Book, real estate and construction periodicals and other resources to identify prospects.

  • In conjunction with the Director of Job Placement, coordinate regular meetings with ACI’s Job Developers and Internship Coordinator to review progress and identify issues.

  • Respond to employer feedback, troubleshoot specific placements (by directly communicating expectations with participants, triggering job counseling in conjunction with ACI team members and making replacements where necessary) and work actively to repair relationships as necessary.

  • Implement strategies to continuously improve program effectiveness and recruiting strategies.

  • Regularly check in with employers after candidate interviews, on first day of placement and similar.

  • Attend contractor, subcontractor and other meetings as possible to secure job orders and provide a quick overview of ACI employer services. Meetings may start as early as 7:00 am.

  • Attend clean energy networking events, MBE recruitments, Special Riggers meetings and launch events for major capital projects (e.g. airports) to secure new employer contacts.

    Organizational Leadership and Management

  • Partner and communicate effectively with management, ACI training, vocational, job placement and internship teams.

  • Communicate and network efficiently with construction leaders on ACI’s board and in the larger community.

  • Use employer relationships to insure adequate documentation of client placement through employment verification letters or similar.

  • Report progress to Executive Director, ACI Director of Programs and Operations, and Board of Directors.

    Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Background in sales/account management and working with small businesses.

  • Experience working with local NYC construction companies.

  • Successful track record prospecting leads and closing sales.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must be well-organized and detail oriented.

  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment and multi-task.

  • Able to work well with marginalized populations including long-term unemployed community members. You must be able to work with individuals in a culturally sensitive, empathetic manner.

  • The ability to communicate well with a diverse group of jobseeker candidates, business owners, and community partners.

  • Adaptable work schedule – where the situation requires, you must be available to answer calls/texts from clients early in the morning, attend early morning project meetings and/or attend evening networking events.

  • Experience with Google Suite, sorting and tracking complex lists in spreadsheets and similar computer skills is a plus

    This is a full-time position and is in person with travel around the city tied to outreach and engagement with the employer community. There will be some flexibility to work remote as program needs allow/require. The salary range is $100,000 – $125,000 which is comprised of base plus bonus and is commensurate with experience.
