The Data Engineering team at JetBlue has been focused on building a truly modern, state-of-the-art data stack, which is evolving quickly to meet the needs of the fast-paced world of commercial aviation. We're seeking a Technical Writer that can build on the momentum of the technical work we've achieved to create this brand new modern data stack, and craft the documentation our users need to understand and work with the data inside it. The Data Engineering team's work is critical to support JetBlue's Operations, Customers, and Crewmembers so that we can continue to contribute to JetBlue's mission of inspiring humanity together.

We are looking for Technical Writer to work closely with business teams, infrastructure teams, product developers and Business Partners to develop data-related and business-related documentation. The Data Engineering team is focused on building data products to support the needs of Business Intelligence, Data Science, and enterprise-wide analytics. The Technical Writer is responsible for planning, creating, and maintaining new and existing documentation to help all end-users get the most value out of JetBlue's data products. They additionally will grow into a subject matter expert on the marquee datasets in JetBlue's stack via mentoring from other team members, and self-teaching methods in order to learn the context and meaning behind those datasets, and effectively communicate them to users. An ideal candidate will have proven experience in technical writing, and a true passion towards delivering valuable information to users who need it most.

Essential Responsibilities:

Support JetBlue's Data Literacy Program by developing helpful, scalable quick-start guides for people learning to use JetBlue's data products, including (but not limited to) data tables, data pipelines, and other reporting products. These guides will serve as a tool to further democratize JetBlue's data, giving any Crewmember the knowledge required to access and leverage it.

Plan, create, and maintain developer-facing and business-facing documentation, including conceptual design diagrams, Entity Relationship Diagrams, solution design documents, reference materials, and procedures.

Collaborate with product managers and other stakeholders to understand new data products the team is building, and translate that understanding into consumable documentation for all data practitioners at all skill levels.

Contribute to the IT Data Team's overall goal of making data more accessible across the organization by suggesting new approaches to documentation organization, content, and structure.

Edit content contributed by engineers and other data team members for technical accuracy, grammar, usage, and tone.

Propose standards for data documentation to data team leadership by drawing on your professional experience, user feedback, and on-the-job experience after several months in the role. Once accepted, overhaul existing data documentation to meet those standards.

Develop clear, concise presentations to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, including Executive-level leadership.

Serve as a subject matter expert on documentation repositories managed by the Data Team.

Minimum Experience and Qualifications:

High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

Three (3) years of experience in creating high-quality, high-visibility, user-facing content for data and/or software products, or equivalent work experience (as a software developer, product manager, or solutions architect, for example)

Expert-level proficiency in writing and editing, including the ability to use a consistent voice, tone, and style

Mastery of the English language, including grammar rules, and usage

Passion for self-taught learning methods that allow you to become an expert on any dataset via source system documentation and conversations with other subject matter experts.

Experience writing and maintaining documentation for all data skill levels, from entry level analysts to seasoned engineers.

Innate desire and demonstrated skillset for teaching people complicated concepts by breaking them down into consumable chunks of information.

Excellent interpersonal communication skills

Possess an entrepreneurial, can-do attitude towards work

Available for occasional overnight travel (10%)

Ability to pass a ten-year background check and pre-employment drug test

Legally eligible to work in the country in which the position is located

Preferred Experience and Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in a related field (Communications, English, Journalism, etc.)

Previous experience working with a data team.

Experience with software project management and product management tools, including Jira, Confluence, and/or Github

Experience crafting a suite of coherent materials (including multimedia assets such as videos or presentations) that allow an entry-level user to login and get started using a data product.

Demonstrated understanding of data engineering concepts

Experience working with the major tools in JetBlue's data stack including Snowflake, dbt, and Tableau.

Proven skillset to manage several project-based workloads simultaneously with minimal supervision. This includes the ability to shift between efforts during the workday, effectively gearing your time where it's most required, and the ability to self-manage the progress for your own deliverables.

Airline industry experience

Crewmember Expectations:

Regular attendance and punctuality

Able to maintain a professional appearance

Potential need to work flexible hours and be available to respond on short-notice

When working or traveling on JetBlue flights, and if time permits, all capable crewmembers are asked to assist with light cleaning of the aircraft
