The Assistant Director of Public Safety serves several functions within the Public Safety Department. The primary purpose is to assist the Assistant Vice President for Student Life/Director of Public Safety (AVPSL/DPS) with investigations and operations. The primary function is to conduct investigations associated with student and employee misconduct, internal College matters and criminal investigations where appropriate. The Assistant Director prepares investigative documents and provides completed reports to the appropriate office. The Assistant Director is responsible for coordinating the scheduling of department personnel; managing the maintenance of department vehicles, sophisticated security and surveillance systems, overseeing Communications Center Operations, Records Management and handling of evidence. The Assistant Director will also assist the Associate Director with maintaining all mandated statistics (Clery, etc.); serving as a liaison to local law enforcement agencies. The Assistant Director shall assume all duties of the AVSPA/DPS and Associate Director in their absence, including meetings, speeches, daily administrative operations; and emergency response coordination and management.
Shift schedule: May include nights and weekends. On call required.
Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Political Science, Public Administration or in an appropriate area of specialization*; a Master's Degree is preferred. * Other schooling such as the FBI National Academy, State Police Academies, or other Municipal Police Training Academies may, upon review and acceptance, be substituted for College Credits toward the equivalent of a degree.
ten to fifteen years of law enforcement experience.
Ten years investigative experience and progressively responsible administrative, operational and supervisory experience (extensive Military Police or Intelligence experience may be substituted for a portion of the law enforcement specific requirements)
Training Instructor/Supervisor or the ability to become certified within one year of hire;
proven operational and planning skills;
strong oral and written communication skills;
ability to work cooperatively with a diverse population;
strong public relation skills;
management style committed to quality customer service and proven leadership skills;
computer program knowledge and experience are essential.
Must be able to work independently within established procedures, policies and regulations.
The Assistant Director must maintain a valid NYS security guard license and stay up to date with all applicable trainings and regulations associated with said license.
Candidates must possess a valid driver's license and insurability at the time of appointment and must maintain such license and insurability throughout the tenure of employment.
A background screening will be required.
