Position Summary:* Under the supervision of the Director of Food and Nutrition Programs, the Program Coordinator manages all aspects of the Culinary Teen Apprenticeship programing, including managing partnerships with all sites, teaching classes, and managing worksite placements. The Coordinator will work directly with young people through educational and workforce development programs, using culinary instruction as a means of hands-on learning, political education, and job skills training.*
The Specialist will work 14-21 hours per week, and must be willing to travel to various schools and sites throughout New York City (primarily in Harlem and the Bronx). Most instruction and supervision will occur on afternoons during school year and daytime during summer.
The Culinary Teen Apprenticeship program is part of the Children’s Aid’s larger Go!Healthy Programs, a healthy eating and wellness initiative for children from birth through adolescence and beyond, which includes hands-on cooking, nutrition education, gardening, food justice and a meal service program that is cooked from scratch and based on whole and plant foods. Responsibilities:* *
Oversee Teen Culinary Apprenticeship Program across four sites. Teach participants utilizing the Culinary Teen Apprenticeship Curriculum. Ensure the curriculum is implemented with fidelity and adapted in response to student interest and needs.**
Steward school and worksite relationships. This includes prompt communication, setting expectations and delivering on commitments, and relationship management.
Coordinate all field trips and class visits, including participation in local networks, guest visits from Chefs, and annual Restaurant Smackdown.**
Coordinate Summer Youth Employment Program placements for teen participants across Go!Healthy program sites and within SYEP Work, Learn, Grow Program. Support the leadership and development of participants in their first experiences in the workplace. Conduct site visits, facilitate groups reflections and coordinate field trips.* Serve as supervisor for select Summer Youth Employment Program and Work, Learn Grow participants.*
Conduct internal evaluation of Culinary Teen Apprenticeship program, implementing evaluation tools including surveys, focus groups and interviews.**
Perform some administrative functions, such as tracking numbers of clients served, ordering equipment and processing payments and coordinating staff orientations.**
Comply with all privacy laws including HIPAA, FERPA, etc.
Assist Go!Healthy team where necessary in implementing other programs.**
Qualifications:* *
2-4 years’ experience in positive youth development. Proven ability to connect with young people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and lived experiences. A track record in supporting the leadership of young people of color, youth from immigrant families and youth from low-income backgrounds.
Culinary background in food service preferred. Passionate about cultivating love of real food.* *Ability to make scratch cooking relatable and appealing to young people.
Minimum High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate (GED) required.
Strong facilitation skills.
A demonstrated knowledge and commitment to apply critical racial, gender and environmental justice lenses to food justice education.
Strong communicator (verbal and written).* Ability to build effective working relationships with school partners.*
Highly organized and self-motivated.**
Ability to give and receive constructive feedback.**
Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.
