Job Summary: The Education Specialist will ensure that the afterschool program utilizes the best practices in youth development and COMPASS/SONYC program site(s); will identify suitable program curricula; facilitate the development of lesson plans and codify learning goals and objectives for all program activities; research to ensure that the best tools which promote program effectiveness are available to staff; and, in collaboration with Program Director, ensure that program model is effective.
Essential Functions
Designs and implements program curriculum and works with COMPASS/SONYC program staff to develop sequential learning goals and objectives for all activities
Ensures the integration of Positive Youth Development, Social Emotional Learning, Literacy, Arts,
Physical Recreation, Academic Study Skills and STEM-based learning and enrichment through sequenced, curriculum-based programming
Develops and assist staff with the creation lesson plans ensuring activity plans meet funder goals and lead up to work displayed, ceremonies, presentations and or competitive play/showcases)
Ensures that implementation of program activities aligns with demonstrated best practices
Provides continuous quality improvement
Conducts on-site activity observations to ensure written lesson plans/curriculum are aligned with framework and facilitated with excellence
Co-facilitates activities with Activity Specialists and Group Leaders, as needed, modeling best practices.
Facilitates professional development trainings and workshops
Researches best practices in afterschool programming and brings new ideas to program staff
Identifies and develops supplementary resources, supplies, cultural field trips to connect students’ learning to real word examples.
Provides feedback in the creation of Program Satisfaction surveys
Assists the Program Director and Assistant Site Director with overall program supervision
Performs other duties as specified.
Shift: 3pm-6pm during school year, 8am-6pm during summer Mon-Fri
Salary: $22/hr
Qualifications
Covid-19 Vaccination
Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field; Master’s Degree in education or other related area preferred
Two years of experience working with students in an after-school or school setting
Supervisory experience of staff is a plus
Knowledge of google sheets, slides, Microsoft word, excel PowerPoint etc.
Solid presentation skills and demonstrated ability to speak in public and in front of large groups
Familiarity with best practices in curriculum building
Prior Experience literacy enrichment and lesson plan writing
