The Literacy Specialist is responsible for providing direct instruction to students, individually or in small groups, to enable students to develop literacy skills. The position is responsible for implementing a comprehensive literacy plan for youth programs.

Responsibilities: - Facilitate the literacy program for the afterschool and summer camp programs

  • Collect data, analyze results, and share findings with staff and Education Coordinator

  • Identify needs and make recommendations for appropriate reading and writing materials

  • Provide leadership for literacy across the community center community

  • Meet regularly with PLC team and principal to report on literacy progress and plan the next steps

  • Collaborate with coaches to identify literacy needs, set goals, and to problem-solve

  • Monitor progress and assist in accomplishing objectives

  • Develop and provide materials for coaches

  • Develop literacy strategies for all content areas

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities related to reading literacy as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications: -Master’s degree preferred in Education

-Minimum of three years teaching experience K-8

  • Possess or qualify for a New York state teaching Certification

-Strong organizational skills

-Strong written communication and presentation skills

-Teaching experience at more than one grade-level

-A deep level of understanding of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
