Job Title: Camp Evergreen Access & Ability Director

FLSA: Exempt - FT Seasonal

Salary Range: Seasonal Salary $4500; Training $15/hour

Position Summary:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Associate Executive Director, the Access & Ability Director is responsible for the direct supervision and organization of the inclusion program serving all children with special needs including up to 12 staff. The Access & Ability Director will work with children and teens with special needs in a recreational and/or organized program setting that will meet the objectives of the Hal Welsh East Area Family YMCA and Camp Evergreen. Provide opportunities for all children to build confidence, learn new life-skills, and develop friendships. Attend overnights as needed. The Access & Ability Director assures the well-being for each participant in line with YMCA of the USA guidelines and association policies in accordance with their training .

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • To attend and be actively involved in orientation, trainings, staff meetings, family nights, and a weekly in-service meeting prior to the beginning of the camp day.

  • To create an agenda for weekly in-service meetings along with the Inclusion Director.

  • To be available to work daily within the hours of the camp schedule as outlined by the Camp Director.

  • To work with other staff to develop a fully inclusive recreational and educational program, ensuring accommodations are made as needed.

  • To meet with the Camp Management Team and Inclusion Director as needed to discuss camp matters.

  • To assist in the implementation of special programs as assigned by the Program Director.

  • Establish positive relationships with parent/guardian(s) and children. Maintain communication with parent/guardian(s) in person and via phone when needed.

  • Establish positive relationships with other staff members; be a positive role model.

  • To assist with the supervision of lunch period ensuring each camper is eating a proper lunch and drinking enough fluids to prevent dehydration and other heat related illnesses.

  • To assist all participants with the daily organization of their belongings.

  • To be involved in all activities, games, sports, etc. in which the campers being supported are being supported.

  • To be involved in the daily swim program as needed. If not needed, make daily checks of each swim area to ensure safety of campers (note: female staff are required to wear a one-piece bathing suit).

  • To act in a professional manner at all times including personal appearance, dress code, speech, interaction with campers, their families, and other staff.

  • To follow and enforce association and departmental policies.

  • To develop and maintain a friendly working relationship and act as a resource and support for other staff members.

  • To understand that you are responsible for your team of campers, CIT’s, and counselors and that all plans should be implemented in such a way that all of your campers can participate in each activity and receive a fun, meaningful and safe experience.

  • To be responsible for the cleanliness and organization of camp areas including pavilions, fields, the playhouse and any portion of the YMCA building used by the camp.

  • To work with the unit directors to make the placement of campers in TPs

  • To be responsible for the camper’s end of the day activities (campers to busses, extended hours, or 4pm pick up).

  • To supervise other staff while developing and implementing a fully inclusive recreational experience.

  • To oversee supervision of all children receiving support; maintain that children are supervised at all times and never left alone, and oversee positive reinforcement and behavior management of children receiving support.

  • To maintain a physically and mentally safe environment for all children.

  • To supervise and assist with the personal care and feeding needs of campers receiving support.

  • To be available after camp hours on the day of the season to assist with the close up of camp.

  • Other duties as assigned by Camp Iroquois Management Team or Inclusion Director.

Experience, Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a child related field or equivalent experience working with children with special needs in a recreational and/or educational setting.

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience working with individuals with developmental delay.

  • Prefer knowledge in sensory integration.

  • Experience in recreational settings, to include sports, clubs, swimming, etc.

  • Must be at least 21 years old.

  • Excellent organization, communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills are critical to the success of this position.

  • Must be mature, responsible and have a sincere interest in working with people.

  • The ability to work independently at times, solve problems and take a leadership role in handling a variety of situations, problems, issues and/or complaints from members.

  • The ability to observe confidentiality.

  • Possess knowledge of age appropriate activities and expectations of children ages 3 to 14.

  • Posses a general knowledge and understanding of the YMCA, it’s goals and mission.

Trainings & Certifications:

  • CPR/AED and/or First Aid certifications preferred (opportunity provided).

  • Must attend and complete YMCA Child Abuse Prevention and other related training at Camp Evergreen Orientation.

Physical Demands:

The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Prolonged periods of standing and frequent bending.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.

  • Will be exposed to illness-causing bacteria and viruses

  • Must have basic swim abilities which include: swim at least 4 lengths of the pool (100 yards) and tread water for a minimum of 3 minutes.

    Work Environment:

    This job operates in a recreational and/or educational environment. This role routinely uses standard recreation and/or office equipment. At times, employees may be exposed to undesirable working conditions, communicable infectious diseases, and risk of injury from others. All employees are required to always follow the preventative health policies of the YMCA. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high.
