Cornell Cooperative Extension Day Camp Nurse - Manlius, NY in Manlius, New York

This position will serve as the Day Camp Nurse for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Onondaga County. The Onondaga County Parks 4-H Summer Camp is located Manlius, New York. The primary responsibilities of this position will include, but not be limited to: supervising the health and cleanliness standards for the day camps, and working cooperatively with the Camp Director and Camp Staff to ensure adequate physical health conditions for all staff and camp participants. The person in this position accepts and performs all position duties outlined in this position description, and performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned and deemed appropriate by the Camp Director.

POSITION DETAILS:

This position is a part-time non-exempt position, 30 hours per week. The hourly rate for this position is $25.00 to $30.00 commensurate with experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • State of New York Registered Nursing License (Active) or State of New York Licensed Practical Nurse (Active), or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification as accepted by local health department.

  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pediatric experience.

  • Camp employment experience desirable.

  • School employment experience desirable.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Job Duties - 95%

  • Perform duties in Camp Health Space or in the field as needed.

  • Provide first aid for minor injuries and illnesses, going to other locations onsite as needed.

  • Instruct counseling and program staff in their health responsibilities, specifically reviewing first aid procedures most likely to occur in their area of supervision.

  • Be a medical resource that would bridge the gap between basic medical knowledge and calling 911.

  • Talk to parents to obtain health and treatment information and to inform them when medications or trips to health facilities are needed.

  • Keep camp director informed of all cases of illness/injury.

  • Organize all camper medications in a safe and secure container and implement procedures for dispensing routine medications and the charting of all medication using medication binder and instructions.

  • Ensure constant coverage of health space; prepare qualified staff as health center backupsduring emergencies.

  • Maintain camp health space to be clean and presentable at all times.

  • Be the point of contact with parents when receiving medication and their dispensing instructions.

  • Conduct inventory of supplies and place orders through Camp Director when necessary, ensuring timely arrival.

  • Access and review health histories and health examinations for all campers and staff as needed and provide lists of missing information to Camp Director.

  • Inspect safety and sanitation practices throughout the camp weekly; suggest modifications to camp director and that would create more healthful conditions.

  • Demonstrate recognition of good customer service in all dealings and interactions.

  • Maintain constructive relationships with staff, campers, parents, administrators and other Onondaga County Parks staff.

  • Present positive image through attitude, dress, and courtesy.

  • Participate in pre-camp and in-service trainings, attend staff meetings, and contribute to theplanning and coordinating of the work of the total staff team.

  • Respect the confidential nature of all information pertaining to staff and campers.

  • Adhere to safety and security procedures at all times.

  • Conduct all programming and activities in accordance with the Civil Rights Act, Title IX Rehabilitation, Americans with disabilities Act, and local state, and regional affirmative action plans.

  • At all times, act in a professional customer service manner including but not limited to business-like demeanor, tactful communications, cooperative, helpful, positive and receptive manner.

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety - Applied to all duties and functions.

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.

  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
