The Microbial Ecology and Soil Science (MESS) lab at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies is searching for an individual to participate in the design, administration and monitoring of soil health and microbial projects during our summer sampling campaign. The project assistants will participate in and conduct a variety of research projects, most of which will take place at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies campus in Millbrook, NY. In particular, we are looking for individuals to help with projects related to how agricultural practices, global change, solar field installations will influence soil environments.
Job Description: This position is aimed at individuals who are excited to perform and learn about microbial ecology, especially in the context of soil health and function. Much of the work will include analyzing soil samples in both the field and lab-based settings. Depending on experience and interest, there will also be opportunities for the research technician to develop skills in soil nutrient cycling, include gas analyses, enzyme assays and stable isotope work.
Some examples of the work they may be required include:
-Collect soil temp, soil moisture, and CO2 data
-Collect soil samples (invert, nematode, and microbe samples)
-Field site maintenance including woody removal and mowing
-Weigh soil samples for NC analysis
-Nematode extractions
-Berlese funnel extractions
-Invertebrate ID under dissecting scope
Qualifications: Required: Ability to closely follow instructions and work without direct supervision. Prior experience performing physical work outdoors under a variety of conditions. Ability to perform repetitive and detail-oriented work. Familiarity with conducting and creating experimental protocols. NY driver’s license and ability to drive up to 2 hours for occasional field sampling. Willingness to work in group settings.
Preferred: Prior experience collecting samples or measurements in soil or ecology-related fields. Experience with invertebrate and/or grassland plant identification. Background in biogeochemistry, ecology or soil sciences.
Employment can begin June 13, 2024, with an end date of approximately September 1, 2024. Position reports to Dr. Jane Lucas and is part time, 15-20 hours/week.
Wage is commensurate with education and experience, with a range of $20 to $21 per hour. This is a temporary, seasonal, hourly, non-exempt, non-benefited position.
