As a Peer Educator you will conduct field-based outreach, client engagement activities, provide testimonials during prevention education programs, and provide service referrals and linkages with individuals eligible for Project Street Beat services. This includes those who are living with or at risk for HIV/STIs, active substance users, homeless or unstably housed, and/or exchange sex for food, drugs, or shelter

Other responsibilities inlude:

  • Works within a team to engage potential consumers, including targeted street outreach, "word of mouth,” and social networking within underserved communities in Nassau County

  • Performs outreach activities in communities where potential PSB consumers congregate including methadone clinics, shooting galleries, strolls, community parks, street corners, and local business and service providers. Establishes trusting relationships and provides information on and referrals to PSB services

  • Provides rapid HIV, syphilis and hepatitis C testing in PPNC HIV prevention grant targeted communities. Obtains specimens for gonorrhea and chlamydia testing.

  • Facilitates linkages to internal and external services including HIV prevention/PrEP/PEP counselling, HIV primary care, HIV case management, Health Home care management, and harm reduction services such as ESAP and overdose prevention services; as well as PPGNY health centers and external social service agencies.

  • Enters data into the AIDS Institute Reporting System (AIRS) and all appropriate information into PPNC’s EMR.

  • Maintains a supply of outreach materials on the Plan Van and communicating with team to ensure that materials are available;

  • Completes and submits service documentation on a weekly basis, and maintains files compliant with PSB standards as outlined in the PSB Policy and Procedure Manual;

  • Accepts individual responsibility for program spending

You Have:

  • Peer educator status must be either HIV+ or affected by a close family member.

  • Must be 6-12 months clean and in recovery.

  • Able to work flexible hours and must have a car or the ability to travel to programs.

  • Ability to positively engage with the community and work in non-traditional settings; and have connections with community based organizations in Nassau County.

  • Good verbal communication skills and comfortable with public speaking.

  • Must demonstrate competency regarding cross cultural differences and issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity

What makes you stand out:

  • Preferred experience working with issues such as homelessness, criminal justice system involvement, HIV/AIDS, substance use and mental health issues

  • Fluent in Spanish and/or other languages preferred

All positions at PPGNY require:

Proof of immunization or immunity to certain communicable diseases (including influenza during the flu season and Covid-19) and testing for tuberculosis. These certifications are required by the NYC DOHMH Health Code, NYSDOH and OSHA.
