SCO Family of Services Chief Operating Officer (COO) in Nassau, New York

Overview

SCO Family of Services (SCO) is the largest non-profit social and human service organization in the New York Metropolitan area, with an operating budget of approximately $260 million, a staff of 4,000, 111 locations and 82 programs. Over the last 100 years, SCO has given individuals and families in New York City and Long Island the support and tools needed for a healthy, stable and successful future, building stronger communities throughout the area. Effective, vital services include family support, early childhood, education, behavioral health, juvenile justice, special needs, foster care, and shelter programs.

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is the primary strategic and management partner to the Chief Executive Officer and will oversee all of SCO’s operations, programs, and equity & transformation. The COO will maintain the highest professional standards, producing rigorous work product in a timely manner and earning the trust and confidence of everyone involved in the organization. The COO encourages collaboration, effectiveness and efficiency to enhance SCO’s operating capacity and strategy execution.

Core Job Responsibilities

  1. Reporting directly to the CEO, the COO will serve as the CEO’s deputy, attending all appropriate meetings with or in lieu of the CEO, and act as the CEO’s designee as required. Represent the CEO at meetings,conferences, special events, and otherwise, as requested by the CEO.
  2. Participate in the Executive Cabinetof SCO with the CEO and other Cabinet Members (Chiefs and Executive Vice Presidents). Share responsibility for overall coordination and strategy building around prioritizing issues and planning for SCO. Collaborate with other Cabinet Members to maximize synergy toward system-wide and program-wide improvement.
  3. Provide Executive-level oversight over SCO program portfolio, working and collaborating with the program and administrative leadership team members.
  4. Collaborate/coordinate with Chief Equity & Transformation Officer for evaluation, development and implementation of evidence-based practices, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), Center for Professional Development, change management, and Family Voice & Choice.
  5. Serve as the internal leader of the organization to identify, design, execute, advance and sustain continuous quality improvement processes and outcomes across all programs. Create, implement and monitor the quality roadmap for SCO.Identify opportunities for eliminating redundancies and streamlining implementation process, including processes for data collection and reporting. Develop data collection and reporting methodology, and integrate data collection and reporting processes with process improvement.
  6. Collaborate/coordinate with the Chief Legal Counsel on human resources management, to keep a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of the SCO workforce and staff body as a whole.
  7. Responsible for formalizing SCO’s strategic planning processes, and, with input from CEO and Chief of Staff, leading the development of the strategy, translating it across functions and program areas, and maintaining continuous change management across functional areas as well as program areas. Collaborate with Chief of Staff to execute said strategy.
  8. Lead government relations for all aspects of SCO’s work, to maintain positive, successful and proactive communication channels with government leaders and to ensure SCO’s sound standing in terms of contractual and regulatory quality standards and expectations. Supervise the VP of Government Affairs.
  9. Lead SCO’s efforts in external collaboration, sharing resources and, with the EVP of Equity & Transformation, sharing evidence-based/best practices. This includes but is not limited to: private and public relations in terms of development and grants and collaborative funding, and other activities with other external partners.
    1. Manage all SCO properties and assets, including leased and owned properties; manage real estate portfolio.
    2. Work with the board of directors as needed.
    3. Oversee SCO’s Communication strategy, both internal and external, via program and service promotion, development of marketing materials and initiativesto promote, forward and protect SCO’s reputation as a responsible and effective social service agency.
    4. Work with SCO leadership and subject thought leaders at external partners to identify, evaluate and summarize lessons learned about SCO’s achievements, outcomes, innovations, models of care and implementation strategies for distribution and publication.

This is a new position at SCO, requiring a seasoned, mission-focused, and process-minded individual with experience executing on vision and strategy through day-to-day operations, program oversight, and staff management. The successful candidate will have a high degree of maturity and personal integrity, very strong interpersonal skills, and will be self-motivated and comfortable in an evolving, and growing organization with the ability to understand the changing external environment and the impact on the nonprofit sector. They must excel in managing finance and operations, including experience with developing an organization’s workflow, internal communications, and critical business processes. The successful candidate will be highly collaborative, with an exceptional ability to listen and foster productive working relationships among the staff.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  1. 20 years ofproven and progressive responsibility in complex settings preferred;a minimum of 10 years of senior leadership experience.
  2. Related education with a relevant advanced degree required.
  3. Strong internal and external communicator and relationship builder.
  4. Experience in community, government and provider agency engagement and partnership building.
  5. Demonstrated ability to implement strategic work to achieve measurable outcomes.
  6. Demonstrated ability to protect, inspire and lead a large and diverse workforce.
