Duties: The Department of Theatre Arts at the State University of New York at New Paltz invites applications for a full-time, tenure track Associate or Assistant Professor of Scenic Design beginning in the fall semester of 2024. This is a ten-month role leaving time to pursue outside opportunities during the summer.
The successful candidate will be a dynamic and skilled educator as well as professional practitioner able to teach, mentor and inspire at various levels of scenic design training. The candidate will teach academic courses in design; the ability to teach theatre history is a plus.The Scenic Design professor designs productions for the departmental main stage season as needed and shares ln the organization and leadership of the Design and Technology concentration which includes tracks in scenery, costume, lighting, sound, technical direction, and stage management.
We desire a strong, collaborative colleague dedicated to academic theatre and program building. Our Design and Technology concentration makes up a third of the department enrollment. The department has a long history of student placement in graduate schools as well as in the theatre, TV, and film industries. We expect that the successful candidate will continue to build on the strong reputation of the Design and Technology concentration at SUNY New Paltz.
Qualifications: Required:• MFA in Theatre Design with a specialization in scenery
Preferred:• College teaching experience• Prior record of artistic/scholarly achievement• Enthusiasm for mentoring students• Professional experience beyond the academic arena
