New York State Civil Service Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 (Seasonal) in New Paltz, New York

Minimum Qualifications

30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.

Preferred candidates will have the ability to operate motorboats and trailers and repair and maintain equipment. Good fish identification skills are important, and the ability to use Microsoft Excel, Access, Word and ArcGIS is a plus. ## Duties Description Evaluate public fishing access sites throughout Southeastern New York. Primary duties will be to maintain signage, document the condition of access points, and update the regional fishing access database. To meet these objectives, the technician will review current fishing access and parcel maps, consult with property owners, and work independently in remote areas with limited cell phone coverage. In addition, the technician may assist with fish sampling in waterbodies throughout the region. This would include using a variety electrofishing gears, setting and retrieving fishing nets, operating outboard motor boats, identifying fish, hiking into remote areas with up to 50 pounds of gear, taking and preparing fish scale samples, and maintaining all sampling equipment. ## Additional Comments Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work in remote areas and in adverse weather conditions. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Night and weekend work may be required.

This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with a duration through 11/30/2020. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
