IHS Markit Chief Technology Officer & Managing Director – Global Markets Group  in New York City, New York

The Mission:

The Global Markets Group CTO will lead a portfolio of critical products and services within the IHS Markit Financial Services group, based in New York City.

The GMG group services the investment banking industry, and their role in helping firms and governments raise capital across asset classes, and around the world. Our clients rely on GMG systems to raise billions of dollars of capital in equity, bonds, loans in a demanding environment where seconds count, and transformation in the industry is at a critical juncture.

The Chief Technology officer will report to the Financial Services CTO and be responsible for application development, test across a suite of products which vary widely in maturity and position in the business cycle. The CTO partners with the global IT and technology management team and collaborates daily with the GMG strategy and product organizations to run, operate and grow the respective product lines and collaborate on major initiatives across the division, and the firm generally.

As a leader within IHS Markit, you will champion and foster a collaborative corporate culture by bringing a unique combination of startup-like resourcefulness, technical expertise, and seasoned executive level strategic experience that allows you to contribute at the highest level of each solution and initiative.

Working with their own application development teams, product and strategy partners and IT and security divisions, the CTO is responsible for supporting multiple businesses within the group concurrently. The areas of expertise and impact will span the full range of activities, including:

  • Maintaining a deep understanding of the current state of systems, architectures, technology stacks, development methodologies, processes, and governance models, and keeping them at a high standard of effectiveness as the businesses grow, the industry evolves, and the firm’s operating environment matures, especially as it relates to increasing momentum on the transformation from monolith SAAS applications to public cloud architectures.

  • Maintaining unblinking focus on non-functional requirements and capacity planning, designing and delivering architectures that can scale to handle the largest transactions and busy market periods with minimal preparation.

  • Fiercely defending the appropriate blend of refactoring, functional investment and tech debt levels by deeply appreciating our error budget balances and market needs for stability as well as evolution of market structure.

  • Active externally to the organization to drive recruitment of talent and perception of the business in development center locations.

  • In partnership with the technology organization and business unit leadership, creating a GMG-wide product vision, strategy, and roadmap by establishing a full understanding of all technologies and products which are sold and/or enabling services to be sold, identifying high-impact business opportunities, contributing to business models and their revenue streams.

  • Identifying, shaping, and driving projects and capital investments to expand into new markets; increase sales, renewals, and operational efficiency; improve customer relationships with senior technology stakeholders

  • Leading the organization in developing new tools to leverage digital technologies to change business value creation and/or customer interaction

  • Optimizing the effectiveness of the Product and Test Engineering functions by improving the organizational structure, leadership, methodologies, performance metrics, and infrastructure

  • Coaching the GMG strategy, product and customer success organizations by developing objectives and contributing to overall product plans, including but not limited to contributing to the cultivation of the group’s overall product roadmap

  • Leading the selection process of replacement/additional systems, partners, and providers within GMG, including location and vendor strategy

  • Collaborating with the business development teams to analyze markets, segments and competitive landscape to provide informed, thoughtful and actionable commercial opportunities

  • Keeping informed about new technologies and best practices that may be relevant to our business, including being an active contributor to the Office of the CTO

  • Achieve planned revenue, margin, and related commercial objectives

Ideal Profile:

  • Served as the Chief Technology Officer of a B2B SaaS business that experienced substantial growth

  • Significant experience with B2B subscription models; understands the intersection of product, technology & data, services, and customer experience — and how this combination drives value creation

  • Created a high-performance, transparent environment that is focused on accountability and results, preferably several teams distributed globally and comprising 200-400 engineers.

  • An Engineering foundation by training or by heart; has the technical depth to quickly assess the effectiveness of system architectures and technology stack, development methodologies, and tools to run an efficient software design and development organization, including leading DevOps and SRE transformations in public cloud environments.

  • Experience with and/or comfort with dotted-line reporting structures / influencing roles

  • Proven reputation as a change agent to successfully influence in matrix organizations

  • A natural drive for continuous improvement in policies, processes, systems, and infrastructure

  • Motivation through challenging situations with a high-degree of ambiguity, velocity, and change

  • Results-driven orientation with a demonstrated track record of driving successful outcomes

  • A reputation as a hands-on leader who prioritizes strategically and efficiently; delegates and empowers appropriately

  • Experience operating in a technology vendor organization that appreciates the necessity of a high level of technology and operational maturity required to achieve long term margin expansion

  • Exposure to the culture of global financial services in terms of responsiveness, credibility with market fundamentals and personas at client organizations with whom they and their partner teams will interact

  • Experience with a distributed workforce that is customer focused
