The Office of Alumni Affairs and Development (AAD) within Cornell Tech seeks a dynamic, strategic leader to join the team as the director of Corporate and Foundation Relations. In this role, the incumbent would report to Cornell Tech s Associate VP for Alumni Affairs & Development and have a dotted line to Cornell University s Executive Director of University Corporate & Foundation Relations, based in Ithaca, NY. The incumbent will also work very closely with Cornell Tech s faculty and several campus leaders, most notably Cornell Tech s Associate Dean for Impact, who oversees and implements Cornell Tech s overarching strategy vis- -vis establishing and building relationships between our research scholars and external partners in service of social and economic impact both in NYC and beyond. In addition, as one of a few people responsible for receiving incoming corporate inquiries, the incumbent will prioritize and vector expressions of interest to other externally-facing work groups at Cornell Tech, e.g., career services, the Studio team, etc. Although the incumbent will not have a supervisory function and will be expected to be a very entrepreneurial and active team player, s/he would benefit from the support and infrastructure of a collegial, small, and very effective team at Cornell Tech that is integrated into a larger (350 people) AAD operation based in Ithaca that houses several corporate and foundation relations professionals, both centrally and on the college/unit-level all of whom can serve as partners and resources.
Cornell Tech is emerging from a start-up phase, heavily funded by several formative principal gifts, and is now poised to expand its corporate and foundation relations program, with an eye toward maximizing corporate and foundation interest in Cornell Tech s areas of research expertise (e.g., artificial intelligence and decision making, humans and machines, technology and societal good, among other areas). As Cornell University embarks on its next ambitious fundraising initiative, Cornell Tech and the Director of Corporate & Foundation Relations will play an essential strategic, largely faculty-facing role in helping raise significant resources, primarily for initiatives that benefit and support the campus research mission. Additionally, as there are multiple opportunities for corporate partners to engage with Cornell Tech, the incumbent will play a pivotal role in routing inquiries to appropriate colleagues, both on the Cornell Tech campus in NYC and on the university campus in Ithaca.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Associate VP for AAD for Cornell Tech and the Northeast Corridor and with a dotted line to Cornell University s Executive Director for University Corporate & Foundation Relations, the CFR director will be the campus lead on building out a corporate and foundation relations program and on routing the large number of inquiries that come from corporate entities. The CFR director will work closely with academic leaders, faculty, and staff to couple scholarly activity with corporate and foundation interests. The director must understand and clearly communicate the scientific, technical, educational, financial and human resource aspects of campus programs. The director plays a leadership role in identifying and implementing strategies, activities, communications, and coordinated outreach to enhance corporate/campus partnerships and to cultivate and solicit these constituencies for support of faculty research activities and campus programs. The director assists the deans, faculty, and staff in corporate proposal development and partners with CFR staff at the university to promote Cornell Tech, develop initiatives, and submit funding proposals. The director values and promotes the campus mission and its role in the NYC tech ecosystem. The incumbent will be expected to close gift and sponsored projects agreements in the six-and seven-figure range in year one, moving toward an emphasis on seven-figure gifts by year three.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor s degree or equivalent; 5-7 years of experience or equivalent experience in university development, business development, corporate outreach, or a similar area; demonstrated team collaboration and facilitation, organization, and project management skills. Prior experience in an academic environment in proactively developing corporate/university partnerships highly desirable. Ability to gain the trust and respect of academic leadership necessary. Capacity to understand and communicate technical, scientific, and educational activities essential. Proven effective written and verbal communication skills, including the proven ability to conceive, develop, and write proposals that result in action. Must be team-oriented, self-directed, and able to effectively manage priorities and projects. Must understand and value the mission of the campus and its role in the NYC tech ecosystem.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree preferred; experience in development, fundraising, public affairs, and/or marketing extremely helpful.
