Job Description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (WSO) is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and protection of the City's drinking water and wastewater collection (sewer) systems, the protection of adjacent waterways, and the development and protection of the Department's Capital Water and Sewer Design Program. The Bluebelt program aims to protect and preserve existing water features in New York City by incorporating natural hydrology and native vegetation to restore aquatic health and biodiversity while reducing flooding and improving water quality. The Bluebelt staff is monitoring in operation and under-construction best management practices (BMP) projects, reviewing, and managing designs, modeling, and designing new Bluebelt systems in New York City.

This position will be part of an internal rotational program, offering exciting opportunities to gain experience and knowledge across various areas within the Bureau.

The selected candidate will assist in reviewing and analyzing new best management practices to ensure compliance with DEP standards and engineering practices, regulations, guidelines, and specifications relevant to the design. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the senior engineer, Summer Intern will utilize engineering, construction, DEP, and other standards and practices related to hydrology, hydraulics, best management practices, and stormwater collection system design to analyze projects submitted to the Bluebelt unit. Engages in research of existing sewer records, investigation, or studies to determine the extent of storm sewer infrastructure within the Bluebelt project design area. Responds to requests for investigation (RFIs) on Bluebelts by organizing and retrieving ongoing and historical records. Manages the design of Bluebelts and coordinate the inclusion of the design into a capital project. Monitors Bluebelts in operation and under construction, ensuring the construction meets Bluebelt Standards.

Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).

NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
