VMware Accessibility Engineer, Training and Evangelism - Opportunity for Working Remotely in New York, New York

Accessibility, Training and Evangelism (Senior/Lead)

Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?

You will enjoy this opportunity if you (a) like developing and presenting training curriculums/courses about digital accessibility; (b) are looking for high-impact work that will challenge your technical skills (i.e., WCAG expertise), and your problem-solving abilities; (c) are seasoned in the nuances of navigating the complexities of competitive bids and contracting; and (d) enjoy adapting accessibility communications (both written and verbal) to accommodate a wide variety of audiences (from individuals who are new to accessibility to seasoned veterans/technical experts).

Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

  • In your first 3 weeks, you will quickly come up to speed on VMware’s accessibility portfolio (e.g., products, employee-facing assets (videos, trainings, whitepapers, PDFs, PPTs, product documentation). You’ll get to know the team and stakeholders – critical to getting your job done well.

  • By Week 4, you will be taking the lead in scoping and building your three project plans (or workstreams): one for the training curriculum, one for the advocates program, and one for the social/blogging/newsletter program.

  • By Week 6, you will have socialized those plans and secured management approval.

  • During Week 6 through Month 12, you will be executing on those workstreams in measurable ways, providing weekly updates, and targeting the following three OKRs for success by the end of Month 12:

  • Increasing the enrollment in the Accessibility Advocates Program by 20%.

  • Full funding securement for the vendor-based accessibility education and a fully fleshed out curriculum of the in-house training to be built and paired with that solution in FY24.

  • Creation and socialization of a formal review/vetting process for all accessibility publications including—but not limited to—the Newsletter, the Blog, our presence on Social, and other posts/white papers written by members of the Accessibility Team and/or other VMware stakeholders.

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

In general, you will be:

  • Knowledgeable of digital accessibility, including the technical requirements found in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and the legal context found in such laws as the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, and more.

  • Leading the selection of a best-in-class, off-the-shelf education solution for accessibility by way of a competitive bid process and building the business case for procurement of that vendor’s solution.

  • Identifying gaps in that “out-of-the-box” solution to supplement with in-house built accessibility training that focuses on VMware practices, tools, and design systems specifically.

  • Leading the development of those in-house-built resources, including using programs like Adobe Captivate, Lectora, and other training-development software.

  • Partnering with VMware’s Learning Management Team to help ensure all the courses and curricula are uploaded into VMware’s education and training portal.

  • Tracking education delivery and success metrics.

  • Teaching and mentoring other team members from the Accessibility Team to empower them to also be more powerful trainers and evangelists for accessibility.

  • In addition to the training efforts, you will also be leading some of VMware’s Accessibility Evangelism efforts, inclusive of VMware’s Accessibility Advocates program, VMware’s Accessibility Blog, Accessibility Newsletter, and more—requiring you to vet and edit accessibility content submitted by authors across VMware.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

You will report to the Senior Manager of Accessibility Evangelism who own the overall Accessibility Evangelism and Education Effort. Your day-to-day work will primarily be self-managed from start to finish. The team values collaborative decision making, and regular meetings are held to answer questions and ensure alignment.
