Police Athletic League Accounting Supervisor in New York, New York

The Police Athletic League (PAL) is the largest independent youth organization in New York City that provides educational and recreational activities for children and young adults. PAL Inc. and The New York City Police Department work in partnership to provide communities with summer and after-school recreational and educational activities.

We are looking for an Accounting Supervisor who will coordinate, direct and work closely with a team of accountants to manage daily financial functions primarily around cash management, contributed and earned income, and government contract reporting. To succeed in this role, the Accounting Supervisor should have strong technical accounting, analytical, and problem-solving skills, and be a team player with both the administrative and program staff.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs and also supervises professional level staff to achieve established objectives and time schedules.

  • Organizes, coordinate and monitors activities and functions of grant projects in cooperation with other departments and outside agencies.

  • Works cooperatively with other accounting staff, other departments and government agencies to facilitate project implementation and completion.

  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless service.

  • Reviews accounts payable, cash receipt and revenue transactions prior to posting to the accounting system.

  • Be knowledgeable of current accounting and government standards and help ensure compliance with such standards.

  • Prepares for and is an integral part of all agency and government audits.

  • Prepares and presents weekly, monthly, quarterly and/or annual reports as required by government contracts.

  • Monitor budget variances and work with program staff to ensure break-even year-end results.

  • Monitor compliance and report on government grants and corporate and foundation gifts.

  • Perform detailed balance sheet account reconciliation and analysis, along with required adjusting journal entries.

  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of financial information.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in accounting.

  • Minimum of five years experience in which two years is supervising accounting staff preferably in a non-profit organization.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

  • Working knowledge and proven implementation of audit and accounting requirements under OMB Super Circular for Federal Awards and authoritative accounting standards.

  • Strong computer skills and proficiency in accounting software including Blackbaud Financial Edge and Raiser Edge and Microsoft Excel and Word. Experience reporting in the HHS system. Blackbaud NXT experience a plus.

  • Proficiency with software like Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Document Management Tools, eSignatures, etc.

  • Ability to use of problem-solving techniques for identifying problems, researching and determining the most appropriate course of action for their resolution.
