Organization Overview: The Goddard Riverside Community Center (Goddard Riverside) and the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center (Isaacs Center) are well-established Manhattan community-based agencies that support services to approximately 30,000 New Yorkers. Intro/Program Description:The Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center (Isaacs Center) is a non-profit, multi-service organization that is focused on the needs of children and low-income families, out-of-school and out-of-work youth, and aging New Yorkers at 5 locations located in Upper Manhattan (Yorkville and East Harlem.) In addition, as a Meals on Wheels pioneer since 1964, Isaacs Center is responsible for the preparation and delivery of more than 1,000 meals per day to the isolated and homebound through the operation of a food and nutrition program that includes a community kitchen, food pantry, and a delivery service (by foot and truck)

Purpose of Position:All Activity Specialists facilitate learning, organize field trips, and may partner with the community on service-based projects. He/she fosters an atmosphere of fun and learning and serves as a role model to youth always conducting him/herself in the utmost professional manner and maintaining appropriate boundaries. They are also responsible for maintaining the target number of participants in each class (15-25). They are responsible for creating lessons, activities, and objectives that meet the individual students’ needs.

Schedule:3-4 days per week, Monday through Friday

  • Able to work late afternoons and/or evenings. After-School hours can span from 2:00pm-6:30pm, with most programs running from 3-6pm.

  • Able to work Saturdays. Most sports trainings, leagues, tournaments and special events take place on Saturdays between 8am and 4pm, spanning approximately 4 hours during that time frame.

    Hourly Rate: $20.00 - $25.00

Roles, Responsibilities, and Essential Duties

  • Motivate students to be active on a daily basis

  • Ensure daily activity lesson plans and projects are structured, age-appropriate, and have clear learning goals based on a curricula

  • Maintain communication with your direct supervisor, program Director for calendar of programs, leagues, tournaments and special events.

  • Motivate students to participate in organization-wide activities

  • Prepare students for participation in organization-wide activities

  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.

  • Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in the activities, and demonstrate use of materials and equipment.

  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.

  • Ascertain and interpret group interests and adapt activities to meet student needs.

  • Prepare facilities for group activities.

  • Greet new arrivals to activities, introducing them to other students, explaining rules, and encouraging participation.

  • Evaluate activity to determine if they are producing desired results.

  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs, interests and developmental levels

  • Promote and ensure the progressive development of student skills

  • Promotes positive character development in all youth

  • Organize and promote interest of you activity at the school site level

  • Assist with coordinating and facilitating student trips

  • Attend all mandatory trainings and workshops, participate and take notes

  • Contribute content for the program website

  • Help plan and set-up for showcases, competitions and event.

  • Specialists are expected to provide homework support during Academic hour.

    Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma required

  • 2 years of college recommended with experience as a member of an intercollegiate team.

  • Minimum of two years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required.

  • Minimum of two years of coaching experience is required.

  • Certifications and credentials in respective skill-based activity highly preferred.

  • Candidates who are qualified to lead instruction in more than one activity preferred as well.

  • Must pass pre-employment background investigation including but not limited to employment history and criminal background check.

    Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Must be knowledgeable and skilled in a variety of sports and have prior experience successfully teaching and instructing youth

  • Must be able to follow a curriculum

  • Must be responsible, reliable and punctual!

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required

    Physical Requirements

  • Frequent bending, kneeling, walking

    Work Environment

  • Mostly Indoors/Some outdoors
