Axis Actuarial Analyst/Senior Actuarial Analyst, Casualty Reserving in New York, New York

The Actuarial Analyst/Senior Actuarial Analyst will assist the AXIS Casualty actuarial reserving department in performing and enhancing quarterly reserving analyses for all segments.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Quarterly Loss Reserving

  • Provide analyses for quarterly reserving for the Casualty segment and present results to management

  • Support the selections of initial expected loss ratios by evaluating trend and rate change experience, working closely with pricing actuaries

  • Perform actual versus expected analysis, including explanation of large movements during the quarter

  • Participate in the production of quarterly underwriting year and accident year exhibits for divisional, segmental and group reserve meetings, along with interpretation of results

  • Participate in ad-hoc reserve and profitability studies on specific lines of business, including analysis of underwriting and claim trends, shifts in mix of business, changes in limits or retentions and examination of loss and premium development patterns

  • Partner with Pricing and Underwriting counterparts to provide insights and better understand results

  • Assist with the analysis of new business opportunities and expansion of current business, as needed

Finance/Corporate Support

  • Maintain relationship with outside auditors and third-party reserving partners.

  • Respond to data requests and provide support for quarterly reserving from the corporate actuarial group.

  • Assist with the analysis of quarterly results and detailed accident and calendar year analysis and commentary for internal and external clients.

Loss Sensitive Calculations

  • Calculate treaty level ultimate loss ratios and loss sensitive accruals; analyze and explain large movements each quarter.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:

  • 4+ years’ experience in the Property & Casualty actuarial field with reserving experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Math, Accounting, Economics, Statistics, Business, Risk Management, or a similar field which demonstrates an affinity and talent for quantitative analysis

  • Knowledge of Property & Casualty insurance company operations and an understanding of the general function of each insurance departmental area such as Finance, Underwriting and Claims.

  • 2-6 CAS Exams. Note that the person filling this person will be expected to take CAS actuarial exams and will be eligible for the company’s actuarial study program.

OTHER DESIRED SKILLS & CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated proactive approach with an ability to think strategically and creativity

  • Intermediate to advanced Excel, SQL Server, VBA capabilities; additional experience with ResQ, Tableau, and/or Oracle or similar applications is a plus

  • Superior analytical skills and attention to detail

For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of $115,000 - 165,000 (NY). The specific salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including the experience of the successful candidate and their work location.
