Position Summary
The Advising Dean in the Center for Student Advising ("CSA") is responsible for advising undergraduate students across all class years in Columbia College and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. Primary responsibilities include student advising, making connections for advisees to other campus-based advising services (resource referral), supporting the Center's programming and operational efforts, and overseeing the academic progress of advisees.
Responsibilities
- Student advising duties include counseling students about academic policies, programs, and options, assisting students in the development of meaningful educational plans, and supporting students by helping them to identify and assess alternatives and the impact of their decisions. The Advising Dean supports students as they develop greater responsibility for their educational goals, evaluate post-graduate options, and transition to life after college. All Advising Deans are expected to develop keen crisis management skills. This Advising Dean may work with specific athletics teams, academic departments in both schools, partner offices within and outside of the University, and will be expected to foster a sense of collaboration and cooperation within and outside of the Center for Student Advising.
- Resource referral duties include maintaining a comprehensive knowledge about all academic policies and procedures, core requirements, pre-professional information, and all non-major specific information. The Advising Dean will work collaboratively with faculty, academic departments, the Center for Career Education, other campus resources and other departments within Columbia College to provide students with necessary scholastic, co-curricular and personal resources.
- Programming duties include supporting the programming efforts of the Center for Student Advising and larger scale Undergraduate Student Life programs such as New Student Orientation Program, Family Weekend, Days on Campus, and Class Day. In addition, an Advising Dean may participate in CSA, College, Columbia Engineering, and Division of Undergraduate Student Life committees and work groups that develop and support the student advising structure for the two schools.
- Oversight of academic progress duties include maintaining current records on advisees (i.e., academic plans, leaves of absence, readmission, summer study, academic disciplinary reports, student petitions, requests for incompletes, graduation clearance, etc.). The Advising Dean communicates with faculty and other advising resources as appropriate.
- The Advising Dean will partner with relevant offices within Columbia College and Undergraduate Student Life to address crisis situations with one of his/her advisees.
- The Advising Dean will be assigned specific cross-unit and cross-functional responsibilities that will require collaborative work within the CSA and with the CSA's partner offices.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent required.
- Three to four years of relevant experience required.
- Excellent written, oral communication and interpersonal skills essential.
- Attention to detail required.
Some evening and possible weekend work is required.

Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree preferred.
- Prefer experience working with college students in one or more of the following areas: academic advising; college teaching; career counseling; academic support programs; residential life or general student affairs administration.
