Family Health Centers at NYU Langone, a designated Level 3 Medical Home, is the largest federally qualified health center network in New York State, and the second largest in the nation. Position Summary:We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Assistant Cook.The Assistant Cook is expected to follow meal patterns, food preparation/service standards, nutrition program guidelines and nutrition education practices for group care. In addition, the cook is responsible for placing orders, maintaining food production logs, inventorying food and kitchenware and making local food purchases. The cook must apportion for size of groups, pre-cut foods to an age-appropriate size and plan for infant/toddler and preschool menus. In addition, the cook is responsible for all housekeeping needs for kitchen and storage room.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Accepts directives from supervisor willingly.

  • Customer Service: respectful, flexibility, knowledge, confident, professional, pleasant, attitude, patience & helpfulness.

  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, QI Program, safety, environmental & Infection Control Standards.

  • Fills our appropriate production sheets.

  • Follows HACCP methods for storing, cooking, preparing and cooling potentially hazardous foods. Includes filling out appropriate temperature logs.

  • Maintains strict sanitary standards, according to departmental policy and procedures (e.g. handling food appropriately, maintaining temperatures, etc.), cleaning work stations, etc.

  • Assists in plating and lidding portioned foods.

  • Cooks products according to standardized recipes, controls oven temperature to produce desirable results.

  • Carves portions of meat, fish or fowl for individual servings.

  • Adjusts heat control & timers on stoves, ovens, steam kettles & grills according to instructions.

  • Bakes, roasts, broils & steams meat, fish, vegetables & other food.

  • Uses a variety of kitchen utensils & equipment such as mixers, grinders etc, appropriately and safely.

  • Washes, trims, seasons, cooks, measures and mixes food according to recipes and Production Mangers instructions.

  • Procures food from refrigerator, freezer or other storage areas. Trims/ Cuts meat or fowl using knives.

  • Confers with Production Manager/Executive Chef regarding modified diet prep and use of leftovers.

  • Plans cooking schedules in order for food to be ready at specified times.

  • Reviews menus and work orders to determine type and quantities of food to be prepared for patients, cafeteria and catered functions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to read and write English

  • Ability to follow oral & written directions

  • Food Handling Certification

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous work experience in childcare

  • High School graduate or equivalent

  • Trainings specializing in institutional cooking, meal portion control, and health & hygiene
