The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), part of the State University of New York and an internationally renowned college of art, design, business and technology with a strong emphasis on liberal arts, invites applications for an Assistant Coordinator of Residential Student Leadership and Engagement in the Residential Life Department. FIT Residential Life houses approximately 2,300 undergraduate students living within four residence halls comprised of traditional and apartment style housing.
The Assistant Coordinator of Residential Student Leadership and Engagement is a part-time, twelve-month, live-in professional staff position responsible for assisting with leadership development and student engagement for resident students. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Community Standards and Support, Assistant Coordinators help to support leadership and engagement amongst resident students and serve as an active and visible Residential Life staff member. Assistant Coordinators serve as an advisor to the Residence Hall Association (RHA), assist with the creation and implementation of student leadership trainings, facilitate program development, and serve on an on-call duty rotation. Assistant Coordinators are also instrumental in contributing to the success of Residential Life and the FIT Division of Student Success through department-wide and campus activities including move in/out, student leadership retreats, summer housing, departmental committees, assessment, and more. Assistant Coordinators perform other duties as assigned are expected to contribute to a positive, team-oriented, energetic, and flexible work atmosphere.
Primary Job Responsibilities & Duties
Supervision and Advising
Advise student leaders in the Residence Hall Association (RHA), including providing guidance, feedback, and professional development through weekly meetings, one-on-one meetings, and trainings
Assist with supporting Resident Assistants, Senior Resident Assistants, and Community Assistants through various initiatives
Facilitate leadership development, foster unity and teamwork, motivate student leaders, and empower them to promote community
Assist with the selection and training of student staff members
Assist with managing programming budgets with adherence to College purchasing guidelines
Serve on departmental committees and provide assistance with that assigned area
Work to advance the College, Division of Student Success, and Residential Life's strategic plan and goals through participation in goal setting, program implementation, committee/task force work and assessment efforts
Attend various meetings on a weekly/biweekly basis including, but not limited to: Residential Life staff meetings, professional development sessions, RHA meetings, committee meetings, and weekly meetings with students and supervisors
Assist with the housing selection process for new and returning students as needed
Participate in departmental, divisional, and college-wide trainings and professional development workshops
Maintain clear, consistent communication with department and college staff on a variety of topics, ensuring a timely response to concerns, exceptional support of students and a commitment to the college, division and department missions
Perform all other duties as assigned
Community Standards and Student Support
Develop relationships with individual students and within the campus community, creating an atmosphere conducive to students' academic success and personal growth
Role model appropriate behavior, personal integrity, and responsible conduct both on and off campus
Maintain close communication and positive relationships with residents, students, and staff
Communicate, interpret and enforce department and college standards and policies
Ensure staff members are appropriately confronting and documenting behavioral issues and concerns
Respond and process alleged policy violations as reported by staff, students, Public Safety, or community members with adherence to departmental and College processes
Maintain due process and a learning-centered philosophy when sanctioning and engaging in the conduct process
Emergency and Crisis Response
Take part in a 24/7 on-call duty rotation and oversee the implementation of duty and crisis response protocols
Effectively respond to emergency situations and assist in resolving resident and facilities concerns and needs
Serve as a liaison with Public Safety, Health Services, Counseling Center, Dean of Students Office, Title IX and Affirmative Action staff, and emergency personnel
Share responsibility in maintaining health, fire, and safety standards
Serve as a Campus Security Authority and assist in reporting incident information as needed
Serve as a responsible employee for allegations regulated under Title IX
Bachelor's degree and at least one year of prior experience in a college residential setting required
Additional prior experience in residence life, student leadership, programming, student government, orientation, community service, or related experiences strongly preferred
Work towards a Master's degree in Higher Education or a related field is strongly preferred
Understanding of student development philosophy, residence hall management and ability to work with a diverse student and staff population
Demonstrated leadership abilities, organizational skills, and excellent skills in oral and written communications
Strong interpersonal skills required. Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally and effectively in both written and verbal form with a variety of stakeholders including, but not limited to, students, faculty, staff, and parents.
Excellent supervisory, teamwork, conflict resolution, project management, and organizational skills
Ability to work effectively and positively in an environment characterized by change, including the ability to acquire new knowledge and utilize that information to develop new programs and services
Capacity to work in a 24-hour/7 day environment with the ability to quickly respond to and handle situations for the entire residential campus
A genuine interest and satisfaction in working with students, families, faculty, and staff and in supporting the mission of higher education and student affairs
This is a part-time (20 hours/week) temporary, 12-month appointment subject to one-year reappointment renewable annually, not expected to exceed three years. In exceptional cases, reappointment may be granted for a fourth year.
ARECs will keep regular office hours, which are scheduled on a semesterly basis. Evening and weekend commitments will be required to fulfill duties of the position. During peak times, ARECs are expected to work beyond 20 hours/week and are compensated for the additional hours.
While serving on-call, ARECs will remain within close proximity to the campus. ARECs are expected to serve on call during holidays, weekends, and evenings as needed to ensure 24/7 coverage, in addition to their 20 hours/week of work. On-call responsibilities are split among staff members.
ARECs are expected to make their on-campus apartment their primary residence.
This position is considered to be an essential personnel position for the department, and as such, ARECs may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled, and/or the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
ARECs may serve in one or more residence halls during their time in the position and may be reassigned due to departmental or college needs.
Hourly wage of $22.92/hour for 20 hours a week
Furnished, studio apartment, which includes all utilities, cable, and internet located on campus
Small contribution to declining balance through the College's dining plan
