HarperCollins Publishers Assistant Manager, Sales and Retail Marketing in New York, New York


We’re looking for a passionate, innovative book person to join our Independent Sales Team in the newly created role ofAssistant Manager, Sales and Retail Marketing. This new role will be a critical part of our Indie Team,with a goal to create and implement a marketing strategy to better manage our seasonal frontlist and backlist title priorities across the adult and children’s imprints. This position will work closely with the internal sales team, our indie sales reps and our imprint marketing teams to find inventive ways to strengthen our outreach to independent booksellers. We are looking for someone who thrives when working with a team.

This is a great opportunity for someone with sales or marketing experience to join an energetic and collaborative team and help us amplify HarperCollins titles even further into the Independent Channel. The ideal candidate has excellent written and verbal communication, is detail-oriented and highly organized, and has a strong understanding of how the independent marketplace works. Some selling experience is preferred. This role will report to the Manager, Sales.


  • Create the adult and kids weekly, monthly, and seasonal newsletters.

  • Manage the galley process for the indies, including creating the request forms for adult and kids’ titles, and working with management to decide on seasonal galley priorities and quantities.

  • Promo tracking and reporting, including sharing promotions with the regional associations.

  • Track seasonal title priorities including Indie Next Priorities and Indie Focus titles.

  • Work with the sales team to organize the Regional Awards process for the Children’s group.

  • Manage the display coop process.

  • Explore Bookshop and Edelweiss marketing initiatives and best practices.

  • Provide recommendations to marketing on titles that would benefit from targeted regional advertising throughout the year.

  • Maintain all promotional assets and title updates on our Indie Info page.

  • Work with the Harper Commerce team on social media that promotes indie bookstores.

  • In conjunction with the sales reps, organize and manage an indie bookseller focus group to identify best practices for our marketing and promotional materials.

  • Assist with managing the signed carton and pre-order campaign process.

  • Work with reps and accounts to expand the B2B program, including identifying appropriate titles for bulk sales, and exploring the potential of a seasonal newsletter.


  • College degree or equivalent work experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of publishing sales or marketing experience

  • Knowledgeof the independentsales channel and current trends

  • Excellent presentation, written, and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and take initiative

  • Ability to think creatively

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Proven ability to effectively communicate with employees across all levels within an organization and with booksellers in the indie channel

  • Prior selling experience preferred

  • Some supervisory experience preferred

  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, with an emphasis on Excel and PowerPoint

This role is currently based out of New York, NY. You will need to commute to the office when it reopens.
