Yeshiva University Associate Director for Academic Advising and Advocacy for PhD in New York, New York

Position Summary:
The Associate Director for Academic Advising and Advocacy for PhD oversees all aspects of academic advising services for students in the PhD program and shall work as an advocate for students. The Associate Director for Academic Advising and Advocacy must work closely with Director of PhD to advocate on behalf of students and ensure that students are being treated fairly in disciplinary hearings and actions, such as those relating to the student code of conduct and academic probation.

The Associate Director for Academic Advising and Advocacy for PhD provides data driven, multi-tiered prevention and intervention services for students, to address the needs of all students. The Associate Director for Academic Advising and Advocacy for PhD will provide direction and leadership for the administration and coordination of student advisement. This position plays an integral part in providing a service-oriented relationship with students, ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the department.

Position Responsibilities:
The Associate Director for Academic Advising and Advocacy for PhD
\* Provides strong, dynamic academic and administrative leadership, fosters a collegial environment which encourages scholarship, teaching, and learning excellence;
\* Direct the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of academic advising structures;
\* Serve as primary link for providing students up-to-date information on roadmap options and course schedules;
\* Oversees academic transition plan process for PhD students as they transition each semester;
\* Coordinate assignment and oversight of part-time advisors;
\* Work with the Director and Steering Committee to develop strategies for improving and incentivizing faculty advising structure;
\* Develop university-wide partnerships to bridge the gap between PhD students course interest in other university programs;
\* Create online tools to support student self-advocacy;
\* Support faculty advisors by serving as an information resources and through providing periodic training on roadmaps, student support resources, and advising software;
\* Engage in ongoing searches for relevant funding opportunities and, along with PhD administrative team, develop grant proposals to support student academic success, special training/specific skill development, student research, and career readiness;
\* Work with PhD administrative team and faculty and guest speakers to organize workshops related to successful dissertation completion, job search strategies, and other emerging topics to support student success in the program and beyond. This could include a "dissertation bootcamp" series designed to help students devote time to writing their proposals and dissertations;
\* Develop, administer and analyze periodic student surveys to learn about emerging needs and interests to ensure program is meeting student career goals;
\* Work with Director and Steering Committee to update PhD Student Handbook and the policies described therein as needed;
\* Help students develop cohorts and encourage relationship building within cohorts;
\* Along with the Director, develop and support ongoingly a student advisory committee;
\* Along with the Director, serve as ex-officio member on the Diversity and Equity Committee and communicate with any other student organizations on responding to student-identified concerns about PhD curriculum, policy, culture, and structure;
\* Monitor PhD email account for student concerns.

Experience & Education Background:
\* Master's degree in field related to student support. Doctoral degree preferred
\* Administrative experience required;
\* Student advising experience required;
\* Knowledge of national trends in higher education and student support particularly related to dissertation completion;
\* At least 3-5 years of direct advising/counseling experience, preferably in social work. The candidate should have some experience or be familiar with the unique challenges facing international and first-generation graduate students.

\* Strong knowledge of Banner, Zoom and Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive and Teams. Ability to quickly learn and help others become proficient in new advising software;
\* Knowledge of external scholarships, fellowships & grants;
\* The capacity to work independently and produce quality work from conception to completion on assigned projects;
\* Knowledge of financial aid regulations;
\* Supervises part-time advisors.
