Business Unit/Role Specific Info

The General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) at American Express is seeking two summer interns to help support our team of New York-based lawyers for eight weeks in the summer.

How will you make an impact in this role?

Interns will rotate between legal teams across multiple business types and subject matter areas to work on challenging projects that have a real and lasting impact on our business. Interns will also engage in mentorship and curated professional development and networking activities. Tasks will vary and may include legal research, document review, data analysis, contracts, and identifying legal and regulatory developments.

Please note that this Summer Internship is a great opportunity to gain legal experience but is for temporary employment and will not lead to a full-time role at American Express.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree & one year of progress (as of Summer 2025) towards a J.D. at an accredited law school in the United States

  • Interest in, and passion to learn about, the payments industry and/or practice law in-house

  • Available to work in American Express’s New York Office 3 days per week for 8 weeks

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

  • Accuracy and strong attention to detail

  • Strong organization and time management skills

  • Proactive self-starter with curiosity and a willingness to learn

  • An ability to communicate and collaborate well with people at all levels

Qualifications

Salary Range: $24.05 to $63.00 hourly

The above represents the expected salary range for this job requisition. Ultimately, in determining your pay, we’ll consider your location, experience, and other job-related factors.
