COMMUNICATIONS ASSOCIATE

Reports to: Communications Manager

Target Start Date: November 13, 2021

Location: DoSomething.org has its headquarters in NYC. As a result of COVID-19, DoSomething staff are working fully remote. DoSomething is exploring a hybrid return to office approach with a target of fall 2021. Preferably, candidates will be based in the New York City Metro area, but candidates in other locations within the U.S. will be considered.

THE POSITION

The Communications Associate will be tasked with generating and coordinating the production of impactful editorial content to advance the narrative of DoSomething’s programming and brand, and elevate the voices of young people.

As Communications Associate, you will support and execute a variety of communications initiatives and projects that strategically align with our priorities to know and activate young people for social impact and civic action. You will play an important role on a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary Communications & Marketing team, ensuring accurate, consistent, and effective storytelling.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Content Creation (50%)

  • Produce written content and provide general copywriting and editorial support across multiple mediums (email, social, newsletters, articles, creative briefs, video scripts, etc.) ensuring all content centers the voices and ideas of young people, with an emphasis on elevating the stories and experiences of BIPOC, historically marginalized and underrepresented communities.

  • Edit written content consistent with DoSomething’s tone and in alignment with the organization’s branding guidelines.

  • Work cross-functionally with the programming and impact, development, and product and engineering teams to coordinate and execute strategic communications and marketing plans.

  • Conduct research and keep up-to-date with media innovations; make recommendations for continuous improvement and innovation.

    Communications and PR Support (30%)

  • Support all teams within the organization with marketing and communications needs; fulfill stakeholder requests as assigned.

  • Provide content support for social media in collaboration with the Social Media Manager; help to grow and expand our presence where young people are on both established and emerging platforms by proactively monitoring social trends, and innovating content strategies.

  • Support all facets of our communications function with press asks, press releases, and project management, in partnership, with our external press agency

  • Lead DoSomething member outreach and coordination for any press related needs, including surfacing and aggregating top youth stories for press, obtaining signed release forms from members, etc.

  • Update DoSomething’s media coverage tracker and other internal systems to capture earned media, social media and impressions

    Marketing Operations (20%)

  • Coordinate the production and delivery of all marketing collateral and branded materials, including presentations, annual reports, flyers, logos, templates, infographics, fact sheets, presentations, etc.

  • Maintain the editorial calendar and production timelines for editorial content.

  • Audit communications platforms to ensure branding and messaging continuity.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    What you’ll bring.

  • Minimum 1 year experience in a communications role with a demonstrated track record adhering to style guidelines and producing content with a consistent tone across multiple formats and mediums. Direct experience creating content for young people is strongly preferred.

  • Solid written communications skills and storytelling abilities. Must be able create meaningful and relatable narratives for a diverse set of audiences including our members, our partners, and the media.

  • Finely tuned Interpersonal skills , and an ability to communicate and collaborate seamlessly across multiple stakeholders and teams.

  • Working knowledge of CRM(s) like Hubspot and Salesforce, social scheduling and listening tools and content management systems (we use Contentful). Familiarity with Looker, Google Analytics and data visualization tools is a huge plus.

  • Detail oriented. You have a proven track record of delivering on critical tasks with a high degree of accuracy and minimal oversight.

  • Highly efficient. You’re proficient in the project management tools (e.g. Trello, AirTable, Slack) and techniques to keep things running smoothly.

  • Deadline-driven and results-oriented with the ability to prioritize competing priorities, effectively manage expectations, and ask for help when needed.

  • A team player. You come with a proven background collaborating cross-functionally across diverse groups of stakeholders to deliver results.

  • Social media obsessed. You’re knowledgeable about social media platforms from a branding perspective, including (but not limited to) YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Twitch, as well as emerging trends within the social space.

  • Pop culture conscious. You know how to keep your finger on the pulse of current events and trends among our primary demographic, and you’re practiced in applying an inclusive lens to inform your understanding of youth culture throughout the identity and political spectrum.

  • Skilled in reporting. You are comfortable tracking information and navigating spreadsheets, distilling insights from data, and communicating data-backed recommendations for continuous process improvement.

  • JazzHR maintains secure job board pages. Job boards will default to HTTPS. Additionally, if we were to terminate our contract with JazzHR our candidate data is deleted from JazzHR’s systems in accordance with JazzHR’s Terms of Service.
