SMBC Corporate Research - Team Lead, VP in New York, New York

Overview

Reporting to Tokyo Head Office, the Corporate Research Department serves as an independent research function and information repository with the goal of supporting the growth initiatives of the Americas Division. Its due diligence activities support senior management, marketing, credit, risk management and others in decision making positions to mitigate the bank's risk and enhance profitability.

Reporting to the Department Head ("DH") of Corporate Research, the VP/Team Leader conducts research on country and industry trends, gathering intelligence on assigned industries and constituents. The VP/Team Leader provides operational support, contributes to the strategic direction of the department and as a seasoned and proven researcher, publishes written research and strategy reports for assigned sectors and constituents with responsibility for small and mid-sized clients while also providing support on larger clients. The VP/Team Leader follows research policies to ensure the quality and accuracy of their research output. Research produced is distributed widely within the organization. The VP/Team Leader also participates in both external and internal client meetings to exchange information and opinions. The position may include supervision of junior staff. The VP/Team Leader conducts research at a transactional level with time spent on due diligence, document processing, financial /statistical analysis, and performs all work independently. All research work is presented and typically reviewed by their Senior Team Leader and then the Department Head.

Responsibilities

  • Manages industry specific research: provides direction and ensures focus of written research reports, its depth, quality of and timeliness of delivery. Forwards all reports to their Senior Team Leader and then the DH for approval

  • Meets and interacts with relevant departments to inform about business direction, sharing written industry reports and supporting information concerning potential and specific risks, as approved by the DH and/or Head Office

  • Conducts ongoing due diligence including proper credit monitoring of obligors in his/her sector coverage and proposes necessary credit protection action through negotiation with relevant departments

  • Serves in an advisory role and may participate with relationship managers in targeted client meetings when required

  • Prepares and contributes information for internal meetings and presentations in consultation with their Senior Team Leader and the DH

  • Prepares and contributes information for external customer presentations

  • Leads and coaches junior staff on the team and knowledge shares with colleagues across the department

Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of banking industry and products of U.S. and Japanese banks

  • Expert knowledge of U.S. and Japanese banking regulations, legislative and judicial processes

  • Expert knowledge of the financial marketplace, trends and client profiles

  • Expert understanding of the research function, an ability to understand various industries and locate relevant information sources

  • Strong knowledge of corporate finance, valuation and grading methodologies

  • Strong project management and leadership skills; ability to manage and mentor junior staff

  • Ability to maintain a strong network of contacts including industry experts and ratings agencies

  • Highly analytical and a logical thinker

  • Strong communication skills; expert writing and presentation skills

  • In an advisory role, the ability to provide outward facing client relations

Other Qualifications:

  • 7 to 10 years of specialized experience in financial services. Bank research, ratings agency or experience as buy-side analyst is a plus. 1-2 years' experience in management role preferred.

  • Required: BA/BS; Preferred: MA/MS/MBA

  • Licenses/Certifications/Registrations: CFA / CPA a plus but not required; Bloomberg

  • Business Fluency in the following languages: Japanese, Spanish &/or Portuguese is a plus

  • Software Systems / Programming Languages: MS Office (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
