Credit Review is a key department within MUFG’s third line of defense. Our mission is to provide executive management and the Board of Directors with an independent view of asset quality and credit risk management practices across all businesses or functions that create or manage credit exposure. The team is comprised of seasoned risk management professionals with deep credit analysis and transaction skills across wholesale and investment banking, capital markets, commercial, and consumer banking domains.

Credit Review is a global function with four primary hub locations in London, Tokyo, Singapore and New York. Each location operates as a standalone department covering its respective geographic region with dual accountability to local legal entity Board committees as well as to global Credit Review department leadership in Tokyo.

The position being offered resides within the Americas Credit Review (ACR) department which provides coverage for credit exposure originated or managed in the United States, Canada and Latin America. The position being offered will be located in our New York, NY office.

Job Summary:

The Director, Corporate Banking position is a key management role within ACR, reporting directly to the Managing Director - Head of ACR as part of his Senior Leadership Team (SLT). This team leader role is responsible primarily for ACR’s coverage of cash flow-based Wholesale and Investment Banking credit exposure as well as certain specialty portfolios such as Financial Institutions, Public Finance and Healthcare.

As our Corporate Banking team leader, the incumbent will be responsible for defining portfolio coverage strategy, assessment methodologies and testing procedures, the risk assessment and annual planning processes for assigned portfolios, overseeing examination execution, and periodically reporting findings to ACR and MUFG senior management. In delivering on this mandate, the incumbent will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including supervisory authorities; managing and developing 8-10 aligned team members; and leading ACR’s broader goals and initiatives as directed by the Head of ACR.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Structure and oversee execution of an efficient and effective approach to ACR’s day-to-day coverage of assigned portfolios and provide periodic reports of results to senior management

  • Oversee asset quality / loan review examinations, review and opine on team member testing procedures, and provide assurance on the completeness and accuracy of examination activities to senior management

  • Prepare timely, concise reports which articulate appropriate risk management ratings and significant issues observed. Follow up with Business Unit management for satisfactory completion of outstanding issues raised by internal and external examiners

  • Develop dynamic, ongoing and risk-based monitoring and examination programs. Monitor risk asset portfolios to identify deterioration or negative management control trends and review compliance with policies, guidelines and regulations

  • Keep ACR management informed on degree and direction of risk in various portfolios, particularly the more complex and/or specialized portfolios. Clearly communicate emerging risks and sensitive issues at the highest level of bank management

  • Provide guidance to, maintain and lead ACR assessment methodologies for assigned coverage areas, while also operating within industry best practices, applicable regulations, and internal and external expectations

  • Define, lead and manage strategic initiatives and other special projects for the department in support of achieving ACR’s objectives

  • As a critical member of ACR’s SLT, actively contribute to department strategy, decision-making and oversight, serving as an ambassador of the team to other departments

  • Develop and manage a staff of 8-10 team members

  • Effectively manage senior executive relationships (internal and external) to a mutually accountable, productive, respectful, and trusted level

  • Act as a leader and role model; engage as a team player across peers and in influencing the SLT; develop staff across ACR; and continuously improve self and department

Qualifications

  • Fifteen or more years of credit review, underwriting, portfolio management or credit risk management experience, including significant management and leadership responsibility

  • Extensive wholesale corporate lending, capital markets, and/or investment banking product experience, including significant credit risk experience with investment grade and non-investment grade obligors, leveraged finance, structured finance, and multiple industry specialties

  • Strong knowledge of Federal Reserve Bank (FRB) and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) regulatory expectations and business practices

  • Extensive knowledge and experience with credit review department operations, methodologies and processes, including regulatory expectations

  • Proven track record leading teams of 5-10 people; recruiting, developing and motivating talent; and promoting a culture of ownership, accountability and inclusivity

  • Strong influencing skills and comfort acting as a player-coach; successful track record coordinating / integrating efforts across multiple groups of constituents

  • Proven project management skills, including a track record of leading multiple projects simultaneously towards intended deliverables

  • Proven experience presenting to and interacting with executive stakeholders; track record of effectively calibrating messages and communication style for senior audiences

  • Detail orientation, including relentless attention to achieving high quality in all you do

  • Extensive experience with the financial industry and related markets, banking products, and current industry events and trends

  • Proficiency with MS Office applications; experience with reporting tools a plus

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
