Job Description

Data journalism has become an essential part of The Times’s report and increasingly common in our regular news coverage. Data clarifies subjects like Covid hospitalization rates and aids explanations of events like the latest jobs report. It fuels enterprise and investigative journalism, revealing the hidden prices of health care or exposing the punishing reach of racism. And projects like our Covid-19 case tracker have demonstrated how data journalism can play a crucial role to millions of people, providing clear and trustworthy information about the places our readers live and in ways that help them navigate their daily lives.

But our vision is for data journalism to play an even bigger role in our news report, and for readers to regularly turn to The Times for sophisticated analysis, data-driven dashboards and tools, and impactful data-driven investigative projects.

We are looking for a seasoned journalist to serve as The Times’s Data Editor and help lead this expansion, building out a team of data journalists and statisticians who will collaborate on projects with journalists on desks across the newsroom, as well as pursue their own ideas.

We are looking for an editor who:

  • Has significant experience conceiving, managing and editing ambitious data-driven journalistic projects

  • Wants to manage and grow a team of data journalists and statisticians, helping them progress in their careers

  • Has statistical expertise and is creative in finding ways to apply statistical analysis to the news

  • Can work with department heads to identify opportunities for data-driven journalism

  • Is collaborative, and is excited about working with editors and reporters from across the newsroom

  • Generates ideas on how we can use data to clearly explain the news to our readers

  • Will set the standards for the use of data and statistics across the news report, and consult with desks on stories as necessary

Internal and external candidates should write a short memo articulating a vision for how data-driven journalism could advance The Times’s coverage, as well as apply in Workday.
