Reports to: VP, Engineering

Target Start Date: November 1, 2021

Location: has its headquarters in NYC. As a result of COVID-19, DoSomething staff are working fully remote. DoSomething is exploring a hybrid return to office approach with a target of fall 2021. Preferably, candidates will be based in the New York City Metro area, but candidates in other locations within the U.S. will be considered.

DoSomething is seeking an innovative solutions-oriented, collaborative Data Engineer to optimize our current data solutions and build new data solutions in service of establishing DoSomething as a center for excellence in service of youth-led social impact.

Reporting to the Vice President, Engineering, the Data Engineer will contributes to the mission and vision of by supporting our day- to-day data needs and collaborating within the organization to develop new solutions that leverage our data to motivate and represent the interests of young people across the spectrum of identity based on youth focused research, data and insights.


Data Support (40%)

  • Identify gaps in data collection and collaborate with product, engineering and analytics team members on data capture requirements /specifications

  • Support ad hoc data / Looker support requests from business stakeholders, periodically

    Data Modeling and Analytics Engineering (30%)

  • Drive the design and launch of data models and pipelines in our data warehouse, continuously improving our overall data availability and quality.

  • Assess and own our data use cases, identify gaps in our data collection and quality, and regularly collaborate with product engineering and data stakeholders on data model requirements.

  • Incorporate business logic into query building to transform data and build downstream tables for business analysis, setting up and maintaining the jobs to populate these tables

  • Diagnose and fix data discrepancies and maintain transparent, well-documented data model code to foster data trust, collaboration, maintainability, and usability over time.

  • Incorporate data modeling and analytics engineering best practices into our system (e.g. scalable data model design practices, data & schema testing)

    Infrastructure Development & Leadership (30%)

  • Develop, maintain and improve data infrastructure, including our data warehouse, ingestion pipeline, endpoints and monitoring tools.

  • Tune SQL queries and data warehouse configurations to improve performance while keeping costs in mind.

  • Optimize our monitoring systems to ensure our data pipelines are healthy, sustainable and scalable on a continuous basis.

  • Lead our internal standards for style, maintainability, and best practices for a high-scale data infrastructure.

  • Collaborate with a Data Scientist to develop and maintain predictive models and machine learning algorithms.



  • 3+ years of experience in a dedicated data team role with a substantial engineering component, working within modern analytics teams in high-growth, high-performance environments.

  • Highly skilled in analytical SQL in support of advanced data modeling/ transformations, templating languages (such as Jinja), and manipulating multiple data formats (XML, JSON)

  • 2-3 years of experience with R/ Python or similar languages in a production environment

  • Familiarity developing, debugging, and deploying infrastructure within a cloud environment and can maintain/ enhance custom data integrations

  • Experience w/ modern data stack technologies including:

  • BI reporting tools (e.g. Looker, Tableau)

  • data transformation systems (dbt preferred)

  • cloud data pipelines (e.g. Fivetran, Stitch)

  • orchestration (e.g. Jenkins, dbtCloud)

  • data warehouse environments (e.g. Redshift, Snowflake etc

  • Track record of collaborating with other data professionals and technical teams to develop a data platform, including upstream requirements, data model, data workflows, SLOs, etc

  • Comfortable driving multiple stages of data tools project cycle , e.g. identification of data platform problems-to-be-solved, solution evaluation, proof-of-concept, & implementation

  • Relentlessly focused on sustainable data quality and leads the conversation on standards & best practices (ie. version control, testing, continuous integration)

  • Understanding of best practices around modeling data within specific business domains (e.g. marketing, product, member retention)

  • Knowledge of how to easily break down ambiguous problems and propose impactful data modeling designs

  • Extend the schema in collaboration with the data team’s needs, find and deal with bad data and duplicates, optimize storage and retrieval.

  • Simplify, extend, refactor, and test, all in Python . Document our processes and our reasoning.

  • Data ingestion of new data sources , whether from our own apps or external services, by API integrations and streaming events.

  • DoSomething will retain candidate profiles for 3 years.

  • Annually on August 1, candidate profiles from 3+ years prior will be entirely deleted from our system.

    Is your data secure?

  • JazzHR maintains secure job board pages. Job boards will default to HTTPS. Additionally, if we were to terminate our contract with JazzHR our candidate data is deleted from JazzHR’s systems in accordance with JazzHR’s Terms of Service.
