Job Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 9,000 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The Department of Correction's Office of Public Information works with all divisions to support the agency's internal and external communications. This includes producing a wide variety of content for distribution, from newsletters, brochures, books, and posters, to content for DOC TV and the intranet, as well as writing speeches, News Releases and Fact Sheets. DCPI also supervises the Department's Social Media channels, and is responsible for coordinating major department events, and scheduling still photography and videography, along with responding to inquiries from a wide variety of local, national and international media outlets 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Department of Correction Public Information unit is seeking an intern to provide administrative assistance and assist with the following tasks:

  • Compiling daily news clips and then sharing them with agency stakeholders.

  • Compiling the daily media report, which is a list of inquiries received by the press office on that day.

  • Assist with social media (we’ll be down one person who’s going on leave) and attend all photo shoots with staff photographer or social media director.

  • Other office duties as assigned.

Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).

NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
